After the dust settled in St. Louis on Thursday the Cubs earned a four-game split against their division rival and even got an apology from one of their former players.
Cubs fans are no strangers to seeing Contreras getting into on-field shouting matches with other players and that was the case in Chicago’s 3-0 win today. In the ninth inning, Cubs closer Daniel Palencia drilled Contreras with a 100mph fastball. There was obviously no intent to hit the Cardinals’ first baseman on the 1-2 count as Palencia then had to face the tying run at home plate with two runners on base. Still, Contreras was furious and as he walked to first base he started yelling at Palencia.
Contreras was still angry while standing on first that Alec Burleson tried to get him to calm down from second base. Palencia then struck out the next three batters he faced and let out a passionate scream in celebration before turning over towards Contreras’ direction, adding a few more words at the former Cubs catcher.
Contreras didn’t back down initially and he was soon surrounded by his teammates. The benches technically cleared, but it was only because the Cubs were celebrating their second straight shutout win, while Contreras was looking for a fight.
After the game Contreras reflected on his reaction and offered a public apology.
Meanwhile, Palencia has no ill-will toward Contreras, who he saw growing up as a kid and admires him as a fellow Venezuelan.
This isn’t the first time in 2025 that Contreras has been in the middle of some on-field drama. Last week he got into with the Milwaukee Brewers after causing a Brewers’ player to trip over his foot running by first base. Contreras went on a rant after the incident, calling out an unspecified player on Milwaukee, going as far as calling him a, “fucking pussy.”
The Cubs will host the Cardinals at Wrigley Field during the 4th of July weekend. Should see more fireworks then.

I don’t miss Contreras being on the Cubs. He’s a controversial player who acts and speaks first and then later back pedals. He’s a big whiner and cry and he’s perfect for St. Louis.
