What A Spectacular Meltdown By The Cubs, One For The Record Books

The real sick thing about this whole thing is that as a Cubs fan you can go over the last five games and trick yourself into thinking they could have easily won each of those games. But then you snap back into reality and realize that despite a team not getting swept at home in a four game series and losing each game by only one run since 1919, that’s exactly what would happen to THIS Cubs team.

Anthony Rizzo sprains his ankle and is expected to be in a walking boot for a week, miraculously returns four days later and he even hits a home run to tie the first game of the biggest series of the season. The Cubs, down 4-1 in the ninth, come all the way back to tie it, still end up losing because their big free agent closer who is totally healthy coming off an elbow injury, gave up a home run.

Alec Mills, filling in for Cole Hamels, pitching in the biggest game of his life, throws into the fifth and doesn’t give up a run, but it doesn’t matter because the Cubs hit into a million double plays and couldn’t score more than one run off Michael Wacha, who was just throwing 93mph fastaballs right down the middle of the plate. You lose 2-1.

Tony fucking Kemp hits a go-ahead, two-run home run AND YOU STILL LOSE!

And what a way to cap off the sweep. Bullpen is absolutely dead, but Yu Darvish is dealing again. Up 2-1 in the ninth and Albert Almora Jr., who was put in as a defensive replacement because he’s supposed to be good at defense, misplays a fly ball that ends up being a triple and a few batters later the Cardinals are up 3-2.

A fitting end to this Cubs era. No matter what, good or bad, the Cubs do things in spectacular fashion. That includes another ridiculous meltdown in 2019.
