Despite being fired two years in a row, Chili Davis’ reputation hasn’t really taken a hit around the league, as he’s reportedly in line to get another job at the MLB level.

According to a few reports, the Mets are on the verge of hiring Davis as their hitting coach, almost two months after the Cubs fired him. There are still some things to work out, but it looks like Davis will be the Mets’ newest coaching addition.

And it’s not like Davis has always been at the receiving end of criticism from fans as a hitting coach. He was respected even after the Red Sox fired him following the 2017 season. Davis was the hitting coach for the Oakland A’s from 2012-14 and then spent three years with Boston.

The last two years have been as bad as you can imagine for Davis. The Red Sox struggled in 2017, Davis was fired and then they were good again in 2018, winning the World Series in convincing fashion. Meanwhile, the Cubs’ offense died in the second half and after the season was over players pretty much said Davis was zero help.

Even Davis admitted that he couldn’t communicate his message to the younger players. But his recent shortcomings don’t seem to be a problem for the Mets, who are also in the middle of trying to trade for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz of the Mariners. Oh and they’re also looking to trade Noah Syndergaard as well.

Who knows if those moves work out, but if the recent track record continues the Chili Davis one might end up being the worst.

All right, maybe I’m still mad about 2018, and yes I know it’s not fair to Chili because the players deserve a lot and well actually most of the blame for the poor performance.

It might not even matter what Chili Davis does, the Mets just seem to self destruct nowadays on their own anyway.
