So, last night was really the first time there was some real optimism about the Cubs going after Bryce Harper. Bruce Levine reported that there were rumblings the Ricketts family had signed off on spending money for a star player like Harper in free agency.

It went against everything we’ve seen since November surrounding the Cubs, who by most accounts are operating under financial constraints this offseason. If they were to make any big move it would only come after moving other salaries in trades.

So yeah, when you see this, you want to believe it.

Yet, everything is fucking pointing to the Cubs not actually being in on the top free agents let alone the number one free agent available. From reports to Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer continuing to say that they expect the biggest improvement coming from within the roster in 2019.

And then there’s this from Ken Rosenthal, who wrote the following Tuesday morning.

Via The Athletic.

According to Rosenthal’s sources, the Cubs aren’t engaged in a pursuit of Bryce Harper.

I mean, I guess you can try and spin it by saying that the Cubs may not be pursuing Harper right now, but they could be as time passes.

However, it’s tough not to see all the signs that point to maybe just this wasn’t ever going to work out and that the transparent front office really has been telling the truth about not making a huge splash.

But it’s only Day 2 of the Winter Meetings and again it just makes zero sense for the Cubs not to be in on Harper.

Yeah, I might be crazy for still thinking the Cubs might get him, but it would be even crazier if the Cubs aren’t actually trying to get Bryce Harper.

You’d think that at the very least the Cubs would stay in the picture just to drive up the price, seeing that the Dodgers are now seen as one of the favorites to sign Harper.

So, the waiting game continues.
