Ever since Willson Contreras injured his hamstring on Saturday it made all the sense in the world for the Cubs to sign 2x All-Star catcher Jonathan Lucroy. On Wednesday, after clearing waivers and getting released by the Angels, the Cubs did just that, picking up the veteran.

Lucroy was a damn good hitting catcher, but he’s been subpar since 2017. At the same time, it can’t hurt to add some depth at the catching position. With Contreras on the injured list for a month, Victor Caratini and Taylor Davis were the only catcher on the Cubs 40-man roster.

Lucroy, 33, has a career slash line of .275/.336/.418. In 74 games with the Angels this season, Lucroy posted a .616 OPS.
