Monday’s series opener between the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers began with a bizarre play at first base, where Andrew Vaughn had trouble handling a ground ball hit by Pete Crow-Armstrong. The Chicago Cubs star center fielder and National League MVP favorite, ended up taking Vaughn to the ground, running full speed through the base, where Vaughn stood instead of getting out of the way.
It was definitely an awkward play for Vaughn, who initially had the ball hit off the heel of his glove, pop up in the air, where he juggled it before finally gaining control and stepping on the bag for the first out of the game. However, he’s the main culprit here, not only staying by the first base bag, as Crow-Armstrong was approaching, but he Vaughn was in front of the bag.
There was nowhere for PCA to go, so he ended up taking down Vaughn, running over the first baseman. Naturally, Brewers fans booed the future MVP despite their guy being the idiot on the play.
And actually, a job well done by Crow-Armstrong, who gently took Vaughn to the ground, trying his best to hold on to him as they tumbled behind first base.

The Cubs lost yet another heartbreaker to the Brewers, 4-3, as Matthew Boyd took the tough loss after the bullpen couldn’t get the job done in the eighth inning. Ryan Zeferjahn was charged with the blown save, as the right-handed reliever gave up a two-run single to Jackson Chourio, allowing both inherited runners to score. The Brewers added another run in the eighth inning against Jacob Webb, who gave up a sac-fly to Christian Yelich, which ended up being huge because PCA hit his 41st home run of the season in the ninth inning.
Yet another loss by the Cubs when leading late in a game. This bullpen has been pretty bad since the trade deadline, but at least we have PCA’s historic season. By the way, he stole a pair of bases against the Brewers, so Crow-Armstrong is now at 41 home runs and 35 stolen bases with 17 games left in the regular season. He’s trying to become only the seventh 40/40 player in MLB history.
Oh, and after going 2-for-4 with a home run and two stolen bases, PCA is now up to 9.9 fWAR.
Next time, get out of the fucking way, Vaughn.
