The Chicago Cubs ended the month of August with a bang, pounding the Milwaukee Brewers 17-3, powered by a record-setting nine home runs. As a team, the Cubs hit 62 home runs in August, which is now the most by any National League team in any single calendar month in MLB history. Pete Crow-Armstrong led the way with 14 home runs as he continues to strengthen his MVP resume, while Alex Bregman kept up his hot second half with 12 home runs of his own.
The duo went on a tear during the final couple of weeks in August, as each slugger had three multi-homer games dating back to Aug. 12, while Crow-Armstrong had another one against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 5. The Cubs center fielder has already set a new career high with 38 home runs, while Bregman has erased the bad vibes from the first half, when Cubs fans were calling him the worst free agent signing in team history.
Thanks to their unbelievable power surge in August, Crow-Armstrong and Bregman entered extremely rare territory as the first pair of teammates to combine to hit at least 25 home runs, drive in at least 50 runs, score at least 50 runs, and draw at least 25 walks since 1961.
The last duo to reach all these marks in a single calendar month were MLB legends Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees.

Furthermore, PCA and Bregman became only the fourth pair of teammates in MLB history to ever hit 12 or more home runs in a month. They’re the first teammates to do it this century.

Pretty incredible month for both, but it’s definitely a bit of a surprise from Bregman. Sure, he seems to turn it on in the second half of every season throughout his MLB career, but things were really bleak heading into July. The third baseman only had seven home runs in 84 games with a below-average 98 wRC+. In the past two months, Bregman has slashed .281/.349/.586 with 16 home runs and a 155 wRC+ in 51 games.
Bregman is now up to a 4.2 fWAR in his first year with the Cubs.
