The Cubs made their first splash of the season on Tuesday, signing outfielder and first baseman Cody Bellinger to a one-year contract. On Tuesday night, Jed Hoyer addressed the media in San Diego and said the Cubs are close to a few more deals.

Could the Cubs be on the verge of finally signing one of the free agent shortstops?

A little more from Hoyer on the Marquee Sports Network.

“Finding guys that can help us now & hopefully in the future and also not hinder us in the future. We want to compete next year. We want to make moves to do that and obviously we are getting close to a few deals and will keep working on a bunch more.”

The Cubs are also heavily involved in the starting pitching market, linked to several free agents in the past few weeks.

According to Bruce Levine, the Cubs may be nearing a deal with 31-year-old righty Jameson Taillon.

On Monday, national MLB insider Mark Feinsand named the Cubs among four teams to watch on the Yankees’ free agent starter.

But wait, there’s more!

MLB Network’s Jon Morosi also appeared on Marquee Sports Network Tuesday night and he brought up two names for the Cubs.

I’ll say it once again. If the Cubs sign Swanson, then the Cubs become a better team. I wouldn’t be overly excited, but I certainly won’t be bummed. Maybe a little underwhelmed considering the other shortstops, but fine. But if it’s Swanson AND another one of the shortstops, then yeah obviously let’s fucking go Cubs.

Cubs GM Carter Hawkins isn’t trying to hide the team’s interest in the shortstops either.

“We are actively involved in that market. Whether or not we’re gonna get one of those shortstop is TBD but we’re certainly actively involved.”

The Cubs reportedly do have an offer on the table for Carlos Correa.

And let’s not forget about Kodai Senga either!

Earlier on Tuesday, Jon Heyman mentioned the Cubs still being in Senga’s list of suitors as well.

There has been some confusion today about what Senga’s agent has told the media regarding the right-handed pitcher. Almost all media outlets are reporting that Senga has received multiple offers of 5-6 years.

However, it appears as though the agent was actually saying that Senga has gotten 5 or 6 offers for multiple years.

The entire free agent market has been robust so far this offseason and we saw another example of that as Taijuan Walker agreed to a four-year contract with the Phillies. Walker is going to end up beating his contract projection by more than $10 million, as he’s set to earn $72 million in Philadelphia.

Walker was reportedly on the Cubs radar the past few weeks along with his former Mets teammate Chris Bassitt.

The Winter Meetings are set to conclude on Thursday. Let’s hope by then the Cubs have made at least one more big signing. They are after all said to be opening up their checkbook this offseason.

Cody is a good risk. One year to prove himself. I just dont see them getting Correa. He doesn’t want to be in a rebuild. The $ he will command? It could cripple us forever. I would rather see them get a catcher, maybe another starter. Get some arms in the bullpen. Then make a trade or two.

As a cubs fan this makes me excited to see the team involved whether or not they get the players they want or not it’s the effort of getting that excites me. If they get one of the SS will make this even better… it can’t be worse than the White Sox
