Former Cubs Player Finds Unique Way To Announce Retirement

Last offseason the Cubs were trying to find a veteran backup catcher, while also courting free agent pitcher Yu Darvish. Chris Gimenez happened to be available and was a close friend with Darvish, going back to their playing days with the Rangers. The Cubs signed Gimenez and a month later Darvish signed as well. One signing was obviously bigger than the other, but both failed miserably in 2018.

The best case scenario for Gimenez was for him to be a mentor for Willson Contreras, occasionally fill in behind the plate and maybe be Darvish’s personal catcher. That didn’t happen and Gimenez eventually was called up by the Cubs after beginning the year at Triple-A and boy was he bad.

Name it and Gimenez was bad at it with the Cubs. He only played in 12 games, went 4-for-28 and was eventually DFA’d, assigned back to Triple-A and finally traded to the Twins late in the season.

The Chris Gimenez experience with the Cubs was as bad as you can imagine it being and even though he was actually really good in 13 games for the Twins to end 2018, the 35-year-old has called it a career.

On Wednesday, the Dodgers added Gimenez to their coaching staff.

Gimenez made his MLB debut in 2009, with Cleveland and played part of a season in the majors every year since with six different teams.

He didn’t have any long post on social media to announce his retirement and Gimenez actually kept his sense of humor to hint at the end of his career.

Gimenez took a lot of shit from fans in 2018, but he always handled the insults well and that continued to the very end, responding to this tweet last week.

Spent part of 10 years in the majors and made millions of dollars. Pretty solid for sucking.
