Cubs Sending Catcher Back To Triple-A

-

The Cubs called up Taylor Davis on Sunday after placing Willson Contreras on the injured list with a right hamstring strain, but his time is done in the big leagues for now.

Before the Cubs wrapped up a 5-1 home stand by beating the A’s 10-1, they signed veteran catcher Jonathan Lucroy.

The 33-year-old and former 2x All-Star will be added to the roster on Thursday, when the Cubs begin a 10-game road trip.

Lucroy’s has a solid MLB career, posting a .754 OPS in 10 seasons. However, his offense has been on a steady decline since 2017. In 240 at-bats this year with the Angels Lucroy put up a slash line of .242/.310/.371.

So, the Cubs improve their catching depth as Contreras isn’t expected to return until September.

Meanwhile, Victor Caratini hit his sixth home run of the season on Wednesday, as he’s put together a damn good season despite suffering a hand injury early on.

Caratini will still get most of the starts at catcher, but having Lucroy is nice insurance.

As for Davis, he heads back to Iowa with a 0.00 ERA.
