The Cubs swept the Brewers on Sunday and coupled with another loss by the Cardinals, the Cubs now have a 1.5 game lead in the division. Seriously, the Cubs need to be hypnotized into thinking they’re playing all their games at home for the rest of the year.
Anyway, before beating the Brewers 7-2, the team promoted their two best lefty pitching prospects down in the minors.
Jack Patterson is headed to Double-A Tennessee, while Brailyn Marquez is going to high-A Myrtle Beach.
Marquez is coming off the two best starts of his minor league career so far, striking out 14 and walking none followed by six no-hit innings. He began the 2019 season as the third ranked prospect in the Cubs farm system. Despite a rough middle patch of the season, he was dominant in July, recording a 1.65 ERA in five starts, striking out 41 and allowing only eight walks in 27.1 innings.

Meanwhile, fellow lefty Jack Patterson hasn’t allowed an earned run since June 12! He started his minor league season at South Bend, making his 2019 debut until April 25. He made 16 appearances with the South Bend Cubs, posting a 2.34 ERA in 42.1 innings.
Patterson has gone 34 innings without giving up an earned run during his last nine appearances. That includes five straight starts at Myrtle Beach, where he had s 0.68 WHIP in 23.2 innings, yielding just a .104 batting average to hitters.

Congrats to both lefties, who will each have five or six starts remaining this year, as they continue to rise within the Cubs minor league system.
