Cubs Probably Starting Mets Series Without One Of Their Best Hitters

Anthony Rizzo was taken out of Saturday’s game with back tightness and was out of the lineup Sunday, when the Cubs were swept at home in a three-game series for the first time since 2017. Now, as the Cubs are set to begin a three-game series on the road against the Mets, Rizzo will probably miss his second game in a row.

Rizzo was on ESPN 1000 and the Cubs’ first baseman sounded like he won’t be playing Tuesday night.

Before this latest back issue on Saturday, Rizzo was on a roll, going 8-for-16, with three home runs, seven RBIs and eight runs scored in five games. Overall in August, Rizzo has a .994 OPS in 86 plate appearances.

Ian Happ started at first base on Sunday.

The Cubs will face Marcus Stroman, Noah Syndergaard and Jacob DeGrom this week in New York.

UPDATE

Joe Maddon confirmed it. Rizzo is out for Tuesday’s game.
