Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon has done some creative things during spring training and in the regular season to keep his team loose, yet it’s his ex bench coach Davey Martinez who has done the weirdest thing this spring training.
Martinez finally got his first chance at a managerial position, taking over a pretty talented team in the Washington Nationals. The problem has been that despite the Nationals being a good team they have never won a single playoff series. So, Martinez is trying to get his squad over the hump this year and to convey that message he brought in actual camels to camp on Wednesday.
First base coach Tim Bogar and third base coach Bob Henley each were on top of a camel Wednesday morning, as players had to walk between them to get to practice.
And of course “My Humps,” by the Black Eyed Peas was playing in the background in case no one got the message.

Bob Henley and Tim Bogar just rode into camp on camels. #Nats players had to walk through them on their way to practice. Why? It’s Wednesday, “Hump Day.” And, as Davey Martinez has noted, this team is trying to get over the hump. pic.twitter.com/zTPvbWoT4C

Welp, there are three real life camels here at Nats camp today. “My Humps” by Black Eyed Peas was playing and Bobby Henley keeps screaming “Hump Day!” pic.twitter.com/pOXVhovr8c

Just Davey Martinez learning from the master Joe Maddon. Yet, I’ll still take the Nationals losing in the NLDS this year, so sorry Davey, maybe use a mime next time.
