It was only a matter of time before the Cubs found out if Ben Zobrist would be coming back to the team this season or not and during the past couple weeks the front office seemed to be optimistic that he would. Before Friday’s game in Milwaukee, Theo Epstein announced that Zobrist will begin a minor league rehab assignment soon and plans to return to the Cubs.

Boom!

Zobrist has been on the restricted list since May. He’s been dealing with a pending divorce.

Although Zobrist didn’t put up good numbers early in the season, he proved last year that he can still be an effective top of the order hitter, posting a .378 OBP.

The Cubs currently have Robel Garcia and David Bote getting playing time at second base, along with Daniel Descalso still being on the bench. Ian Happ was just called up and Addison Russell was demoted to Triple-A earlier this week. Meanwhile, the Cubs are still engaged with a few teams for another hitter, so expect a few more moving pieces in the next month.

Zobrist has to be reinstated from the restricted list before Sept. 1, to be eligible for the postseason.
