Ben Zobrist…Back To The Cubs In 2020?

Ben Zobrist spent most of the 2019 season away from baseball, dealing with family issues and it’s fair to say that most fans assumed the 38-year-old would call it a career after playing in 14 MLB seasons. The switch-hitting, two-time World Series winner is now a free agent, but it doesn’t sound like Zobrist is ready to retire just yet.

If Zobrist does indeed plan on continuing his playing days in 2020, should the Cubs try and re-sign him?

As always, it’s about the money, but for Zobrist it may also depend where he’s closest to his children.

In 2019, Zobrist only appeared in 47 games for the Cubs, slashed .260/.358/.313, with one home run all season. I know what you’re thinking. He’s not getting any younger and his versatility on defense isn’t necessarily a plus anymore. Time to move on.

However, Zobrist still makes contact, knows the strike zone as well as anyone else and he’s just one season removed from having a .378 OBP. It shouldn’t cost the Cubs or any team more than a few million dollars to sign him in the offseason. For a veteran hitter who still gets on base? I think it’s worth it.

We’re not talking about Zobrist being the starting second baseman, but as a bench guy? Seems like a low-risk move for the Cubs. But we’re a long way from things actually happening, so stay tuned.
