Addison Russell’s Shitty Game Draws Ire From Joe Maddon

I used to think that Addison Russell was going to be a good baseball player. The defensive talent was there and hey he even hit 21 home runs in 2016. Now, three years later, he still has pretty good range playing second base, but his arm is a noodle and Russell makes too many dumb plays to keep track of.

On Saturday, Russell had his worst game of 2019, showcasing his terrible base running, lack of awareness and this lowlight reel doesn’t even include a bad throw Russell had from maybe 20 feet away from first base that forced Anthony Rizzo off the bag.

Addison Russell made his MLB debut in April 2015. This is his fifth season in the majors and it seems like his baseball IQ is getting worse.

Joe Maddon, who usually doesn’t throw his players under the bus, made it a point to call out Russell for his bad play after the Cubs won 6-5 on Saturday.

Russell isn’t in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Padres. But if the Cubs want to send a real message, maybe it’s time Russell figures things out down in Triple-A.
