A Final Goodbye To The 2019 Cubs By Remembering Guys You Forgot Played For Them

I was thinking about this a few days after the regular season ended and despite having a pretty decent memory I completely forgot about some of these guys playing for the 2019 Cubs. Even when I did remember Carlos González, I couldn’t even correctly remember one of his two biggest plays with the Cubs.

Indeed, CarGo did play in 15 games for the Cubs in June and his very first highlight was this nice catch against the Angels.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t the spark the Cubs were hoping for as the former All-Star only hit .175 in 40 at-bats before he was let go at the end of June.

And hey, remember when catcher Martin Maldonado was with the Cubs for two weeks in July? He was acquired after Willson Contreras went down with a foot injury, but only played in four games. Maldonado’s mostly going to be remember for being traded to the Astros for Tony Kemp that allowed the Cubs to have enough money in their budget to trade for Nick Castellanos. Thanks for the memories, Martin.

Poor Mark Zagunis. He was a surprise addition to the Cubs Opening Day roster and he was even in the starting lineup in the first game of the year against the Rangers. However, after a disastrous game playing in the outfield against the Braves in early April, Zagunis was relegated to a bench role and only started one more game until the Cubs sent him back to Triple-A in late May. He went 9-for-36 at the plate, briefly called up in August for one game before being sent back down to the minors.

I was going to include Taylor Davis in here, but man, who can forget his grand slam against the Cardinals.

Back in spring training I had high hopes for right-hander Tony Barnette. But he dealt with an injury and slowly worked his way back and was called up in June. Yet, the right-hander only pitched in two games and in July he was placed on the restricted list as he was mulling over his future playing career.

Barnette wasn’t the only forgettable free agent reliever for the 2019 Cubs. Left-hander Xavier Cedeno was brought in to be a solid lefty out of the bullpen, but he also dealt with injuries and only threw two innings in five appearances.

And a few more guys.

  • Brad Brach was the Cubs big offseason free agent signing for the bullpen. 6.13 ERA in 39.2 innings. DFA’d in August. LMAO
  • Randy Rosario….sigh.
  • Allen Webster looked really good in the minors and then was bad with the Cubs.
  • Jim Adduci was the Cubs starting right fielder on May 27 against the Astros. He was up for a week and never heard of again. No, you don’t remember Jim Adduci.
