Robbie Gould never did come back to the Chicago Bears, despite it being the fervent wish of many. The San Francisco 49ers didn’t let that happen. In the end, it was a wise decision on their part because they wound up needing his steady leg when it mattered most in the playoffs. Never was that clearer than the NFC championship game against the Green Bay Packers.
The 49ers owned the contest for most of the first three quarters, jumping out to a 34-7 lead. However, Green Bay managed to cut into that deficit, making it 34-20 with around 10 minutes to go in the game. San Francisco needed a drive and needed points to wrestle away the momentum the Packers were building. Jimmy Garoppolo managed to engineer the former, but the drive bogged down at the Packers 32-yard line.
This set Gould up with a 42-yard field goal that would make it a three-score game and all but put the Packers away. True to form, and living up to his old Bears heritage, Robbie was right down the middle. It was rather fitting that a Chicago staple was there to help ruin yet another deep playoff run for Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay.
