Eddie Jackson and Sam Acho admit Mitch Trubisky is frustrating them
The two men to come forward are starting safety Eddie Jackson and veteran linebacker Sam Acho. These are considered two of the smartest and savviest defenders in the Bears locker room. So for them to admit anything resembling weakness against a quarterback is telling. Jackson alluded to Trubisky’s uncanny knack for pinpoint accuracy. It got so monotonous after awhile that he had to start trying to bait him into bad throws. Again, Trubisky is a rookie.
“It’s tough,” said Jackson, who won the starting job in training camp because of his play-making skills and instincts in coverage.
“Even if you’ve got a guy covered, when you got a quarterback that can put the ball in the right spot that only a receiver can get to, it makes it hard on a secondary.”
Trubisky did that.
It reached a point where Jackson said he tried to bait Trubisky into mistakes.
“But his mistakes are very limited,” Jackson said. “He’s just a guy like that. He’s always on his P’s and Q’s.”
Acho meanwhile was impressed with Trubisky’s demeanor. Most rookies are eager to please. They just do what they’re told. It’s not that way with the Bears’ new quarterback. Things are different and based on his tone? It’s better.
“A lot of times, anybody — younger or older player — it’s, I feel like I have to impress the coaches or I have to really do x, y and z,” Acho said. “He’s like, I’m just going to be me. And he’s confident that that’s enough.
“And it is enough.”
Borrowing a mantra of the almighty Madden?
Trubisky has come across that way from the moment he was drafted. He’ll do what he’s told but he’s also going to do it his way. He understands that trying to be somebody he isn’t will be a fast track to failure in this game. In fact this is a credo that the legendary former head coach and broadcaster John Madden championed during his glory days.
The fact that Trubisky has already figured this out at the age of 22? It feels like a sign that he can be everything the Bears have hoped for and more. Still, the games have yet to be played. We’ll see if the Floyd, Jackson and Acho are right.
