The Chicago Bears are usually quicker about getting extensions done with players they wish to keep. However, this offseason has been anything but normal. It created a challenge for GM Ryan Pace given knowledge that the 2021 salary cap could see a significant drop. That along with a noteworthy gulf in desired numbers has led to a stall in contract talks with star receiver Allen Robinson.
When things slowed to a crawl and no deal was reached before the start of the season, Robinson was not happy. He made that clear when he deleted all Bears-related mentions on his social media platforms. There was also a rumor he inquired about the possibility of a trade. Something he refused to confirm or deny.
Whether it’s true or not, other teams inevitably took notice and called the Bears about it. According to Ian Rapoport, they didn’t get a warm reception.
“Sources say that Chicago began receiving calls with potential trade interest for Robinson, which generally happens any time there are rumors of discontent. And the Bears not only brushed off those calls, but told teams they were not trading their star receiver, sources say.
Instead, the drama on Tuesday led to a renewed effort to get an extension done for Robinson. Chicago increased the offer they had on the table, and the two sides wound up exchanging offers. Talks resumed, and the #ExtendAR movement picked up steam.”
Bears make it clear they want Allen Robinson to stay
For weeks fans have wondered whether the Bears were actually interested at all in keeping Robinson. Was this becoming another Jordan Howard situation where they were looking beyond him? Not even close as it turns out. Normally Pace is at least open to listening to offers for any player. For him to flat out say it’s not happening? That is a surefire sign the team is committed to getting this thing done.

It’s merely a matter of time and finding that elusive common ground on a new deal. Reports are Robinson is looking for around $18 million per year. The Bears sought something closer to $16 million. It isn’t certain when that magic moment will arrive, but it sounds like progress is being made.
