Sounds Like Luke Getsy Isn’t Having Any Mercy On Bears Offense

-

Luke Getsy wasn’t under any illusions when he took the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator job. He knew the task ahead of him was a tall one. This group had consistently ranked among the worst in the NFL for years. Turning it around is a challenge. One that would require a firm hand to pull off. While the young coach isn’t the type to get overly animated, it’s becoming clear that he isn’t letting his players slide on anything—all the details matter.

Day 2 of training camp was a perfect example. The offense had some strong moments. Justin Fields found Darnell Mooney, Cole Kmet, and Byron Pringle for big gains throughout practice. However, those were marred by a litany of mental errors. Several wide receivers dropped passes, and the offense suffered multiple false start penalties. Getsy openly admitted his frustrations with such mistakes during his press conference afterward.

The pressure didn’t stop there.

He and head coach Matt Eberflus wanted to keep everybody on their toes. So during random moments of practice, they sprung situational drills on the offense to see how they’d respond. That is often what led to the mistake. The defense would work to get offensive players to jump. It was a great experience for them since they’ll see the same things during actual games. There were also subtle details involving everybody getting on the ball as fast as possible to snap it before a replay review on a reception.

Luke Getsy is all about the details.

This is a reminder of how on top of everything the coordinator is. No small thing is going overlooked. His off-season began with tweaking Justin Fields’ footwork and throwing mechanics. Then he instructed players on how to carry the football based on what side of the field they were on. Now he’s covering every possible situation they could face. There is no cutting corner under his watch. Either the players learn to embrace the details or end up on the bench.

Fields has already embraced this approach. So have Darnell Mooney and Cole Kmet. With those three leading the way, others will follow. There will be hiccups moving forward. Questions linger about the offensive line. Luke Getsy is anxious to get the pads on. Only then will he start to get an accurate idea of what he has. The Bears may not be a top offense in 2022, but it’s becoming easier to believe they’ll show significant improvement under his watch.

Man have we needed coaches like this that can describe and explain in detail things that are vital especially in game situations. I’m liking Eberflus and Getsy, they seem like they are what the Bears have sorely missed for years

Don’t make camp easy. Don’t make practice easy. Work so hard that the games feel easy in comparison. Like it. Sound approach.

He said which 5 receivers are best. A little hint on roster construction as well.

Usually they have 6
