The Chicago Bears’ First Big Injury Scare Is Happening At Worst Possible Spot

-

If there is anything we’ve learned through the first week of NFL training camp being back, it is that the injury bug is feasting. Several teams have already lost key players to notable setbacks. Multiple cases for some. The only thing Chicago Bears fans could hope for was that it wouldn’t bite their team, too. Sadly, they aren’t so lucky. On the first day of padded practices for the Bears, the team got to work early in the morning. As players worked through drills, safety Coby Bryant drew an assignment of covering tight end Cole Kmet.

During the sequence, Bryant went up to contest the ball and came down awkwardly. He appeared to tweak his left knee. After trying to walk it off, he slammed his helmet on the ground and hit the turf. Trainers quickly attended to him, and he was taken back to Halas Hall on a cart. Observes claim he was emotional during the sequence, which is never a good sign. The timing of this is brutal. The Bears were really banking on Bryant being a core part of their retooled defense this season. Losing him is the last thing they need.

The Chicago Bears were already seeing the value of Bryant.

After multiple days of the offense having the upper hand, it was an interception of Caleb Williams by the safety that sort of got the defense back on track. His leadership, intensity, and versatility were evident from the start. Most notably, it was his speed that seemed to make a difference. This was something the Bears lacked on the back end last season. Having him back there would make life so much more difficult for opposing offenses. There likely won’t be an update on his status until at least after practice.

If the knee injury is serious, that means he will miss extended time, if not the entire year. This puts the Chicago Bears in a difficult spot. Their best option to replace him would be Cam Lewis. While the veteran has been spending a lot of time at nickel cornerback to start camp, he has extensive experience at safety from his time with the Buffalo Bills. The Bears would want a veteran next to 1st round pick Dillon Thieneman, rather than Elijah Hicks or Gervarrius Owens, who are career backups.

The Bears could look to free agency for help.

Obviously, the pickings are slim this time of year, but beggars can’t be choosers. The names that stand out the most include Donovan Wilson, Taylor Rapp, Xavier Woods, and Rayshawn Jenkins. All have varying degrees of starting experience and have performed well in spots over the years. The Bears won’t make a decision on that until they know more about Bryant’s status and how they feel Lewis looks running with the starting defense. If the injury isn’t season-ending, they may decide to maintain the status quo until he returns.

All fans can do at the moment is hope it’s not that serious. Bryant has had a great track record of durability in his career. He’s played at least 15 games in three of his four career seasons. The only exception was 2022, when he dealt with a persistent toe problem. We should know more about his status by the end of the day. Usually when an injury is bad, the national insiders pick it up pretty quickly.
