The Chicago Bears are focused on trying to go 2-0 this week against the New York Giants. At the same time, they’ve been beset by an ongoing impasse with star receiver Allen Robinson over a contract extension. Things got heated this past week when Robinson removed all Bears-related mentions on Twitter and Instagram followed by rumors he’d inquired about a trade. So that begs the question. Where does George McCaskey and ownership stand on this?

The team chairman had a chance to speak on that subject during an interview for WGN Radio. Based on his initial response, it sounds like things are headed in the right direction.

“Ted (Phillips) gave me an update yesterday and we’re very optimistic.”

McCaskey was quick to admit that he stays out of contract discussions with players. That being said, it certainly sounds like he expects Robinson to get his money at some point in the near future.

“I don’t get involved in those things. We’ve got people who take care of those things and most of the time it works out with a good result and that’s what we’re counting on in A-Rob’s case.”

George McCaskey has more inside info that anybody

Being the owner of the franchise, McCaskey would be kept apprised of the situation at all times. So when he says there is optimism on Robinson, it’s significant. Ther receiver himself said he had a good conversation with both head coach Matt Nagy and GM Ryan Pace. It sounds like both sides are still talking and have mutual respect for where they’re trying to get.

The sticking point is money. Word is the Bears are looking at around $16 million per year. Similar to Rams star Cooper Kupp. Robinson though seeks Odell Beckham Jr. money at around $18 million. A difference of $2 million may sound insignificant but it can have a significant impact over the course of a deal. Especially in terms of guarantees.

That being said, Pace has a history of figuring this stuff out. It sounds like the two sides are close.
