Former Player Thinks This QB is Ideal Competition for Mitch Trubisky

-

The Chicago Bears sound like a team that’s not planning a big change at quarterback in 2020. GM Ryan Pace made it clear that the initial plan is for Mitch Trubisky to be the starter next season. Belief is he made some progress in a number of areas despite what the stats might show. It was more a series of breakdowns across the rest of the offense that made his job infinitely more difficult such as no running game and zero help from the tight ends.

However, when the subject of possibly adding some competition to the position came up, Pace didn’t seem quite as steadfast. He pointed out that the two backup spots are about to be vacated as Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray become free agents. Change at quarterback certainly feels like a possibility. It is a matter of figuring out who will fill them. There are no shortage of possibilities. Everything from older veterans to potential draft picks.

Former Pro Bowl linebacker Bart Scott though has one name in mind. Somebody who still has lots of upside but can also be had for cheap. He explained on ESPN’s Get Up.

“What you have to do is what they did in Tennessee, which is bring in some healthy competition. But it has to be somebody cheap. So it’s funny that you guys brought up Josh Rosen because I think Josh Rosen would be the perfect person to give the opportunity to play the role of (Ryan) Tannehill to push him.

Now we don’t really know who Josh Rosen is because he’s played on two of the worst football teams back-to-back years. Two years in a row. Remember when he was coming out, he was thought of as one of the better quarterbacks coming out with Lamar Jackson, with Sam Darnold. I think that would give him an opportunity to compete and push Mitch Trubisky.”

Josh Rosen would be an interesting foil to Mitch Trubisky

From a business standpoint, this does make sense. Rosen was a top 10 draft pick in 2018. In that time he played for the woeful 3-13 Arizona Cardinals and a Miami Dolphins team that just finished 5-11. During that span, he started 16 games and was sacked 61 times. People will look at his career passer rating (63.5) to this point and say he’s a bust. That isn’t entirely fair considering he’s played in mostly garbage circumstances. The Cardinals coaching staff was fired a year after he was drafted. Miami also just fired their own offensive coordinator.

So judging him fairly at this point is almost impossible. Rosen will be 23-years old in February. He’s still quite young and might thrive under the direction of a coaching staff that is quarterback-centric like the Bears. Something he hasn’t encountered. The best part is they can almost certainly get him cheap. Miami is a virtual lock to draft a new quarterback in April, so everybody knows they have no actual commitment to Rosen long-term. It probably wouldn’t take much of a push for the Bears to get him in a trade. A mid-round pick at most.
