David Montgomery Putting In Some Serious Work Despite Virus Issues

-

David Montgomery is a divisive persona among Chicago Bears fans. Many are eager to see what he can do in his second season. This after a promising start that saw him go over 1,000 yards from scrimmage and score seven touchdowns. Others believe he showed in 2019 that he isn’t a true feature back and the team should’ve been more proactive about finding a running mate or even a replacement.

It seems the one man who isn’t paying much attention to all that is Montgomery himself. He’s been busy putting in a ton of work this offseason, going through all sorts of workouts and drills to get himself ready for 2020. COVID-19 be damned. A number of posts on Instagram revealed his progress from using trash cans to simulate running lanes to a nifty indoor drill that forced him to catch a stick with three prongs on it, each a different color. He’d have to catch a specific color on each toss. A great way to improve hand-eye coordination.

David Montgomery isn’t deaf. He has plenty to prove in 2020

It seems the primary sticking point people have with Montgomery is the disappointing 3.7 yards per carry he averaged last season. As if that number is entirely his own doing. The reality is far different. Anybody who watched the Bears for even a half in 2019 would’ve noticed just how poor the run blocking was by the Bears offensive line. Too often Montgomery was finding himself getting hit either at the line of scrimmage or in the backfield before he had a chance to do anything.

One must also remember he was a rookie 3rd round pick. This wasn’t a top 10 selection the team made. The odds of him setting the world on fire without decent blocking with so little experience was remote. Yet he still found a way to be productive. This is why the Bears weren’t interested in finding help at running back. They believe Montgomery is poised to take a big step forward this season. He’s certainly working to make sure they’re correct.
