In case people weren’t already aware. David Montgomery is a gym rat. This is something that was evident since his days at Iowa State. The running back is absolutely uncompromising when it comes to putting in whatever time is necessary to be great. That is one of the reasons the Chicago Bears liked him so much. His relentless drive and talent should lead to success in the NFL.

Just how laser focused is he? Montgomery was one of two recipients of the prestigious Brian Piccolo award. The award is given to one rookie and one veteran per season who best exemplifies the courage, loyalty, teamwork, dedication and sense of humor of the late Brian Piccolo. For those who never saw the movie Brian’s Song, Piccolo was a running back for the Bears in the 1960s who tragically contracted cancer and died at 26-years old. His legacy remains strong in the organization to this day. So it’s a pretty big honor.

Former Bears like Dan Hampton, Mike Singletary, Mark Carrier, Brian Urlacher, Charles Tillman, and Olin Kreutz have earned it. Notable company. While Montgomery was honored by the award, it was clear even that was not going to steer him too far away from the football field. The running back’s meeting with the press to discuss it happened right in the middle of a practice session with quarterback Mitch Trubisky and other teammates.

David Montgomery will be ready whenever training camp begins

One of the big concerns among experts going into this summer is the absence of minicamps and OTAs. Usually those practices are used to help get a number of players back into shape. This after maybe getting a little too comfortable in the offseason. Without them, a number of guys could show up to training camp unprepared for the grind to come. It’s safe to say the Bears won’t have to worry about that with Montgomery. He’s been working out constantly since last season ended, even after the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

A lot of people have been rather tough on him lately. Acting like his 2019 was a major failure. That isn’t entirely fair. Remember that Montgomery was a rookie 3rd round pick. He played behind an offensive line that really struggled all year. Yet he still managed to produce over 1,000 total yards and scored seven touchdowns. That isn’t bad. Sure he averaged just 3.7 yards per carry but for a first year, he did good work.

It feels like 2020 could be his true time to shine.
