Darrynton Evans Arrived Quietly In Chicago With Enormous Upside

-

Tarik Cohen was cut on Friday by the Chicago Bears. A sad end to what was once an exciting career. It is amazing how one unfortunate tackle attempt changed the trajectory of his time here. Yet it wasn’t a surprise. New GM Ryan Poles wasn’t going to pay him that bloated contract anymore. Not after missing nearly two full seasons with a knee issue. If Poles wants to take a risk on a health hazard running back, he’ll do it on a more favorable dime. Enter Darrynton Evans.

A 3rd round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2019, he arrived with a lot of fanfare after his tremendous run at Appalachian State. His final season saw him score 23 touchdowns (18 on the ground and five through the air). He followed that up with an impressive showing at the scouting combine, running a swift 4.41 in the 40-yard dash. This helped illustrate how explosive he could be—a perfect counterbalance to Titans star Derrick Henry. Sadly things never got off the ground. Hamstring issues sidelined him as a rookie, and then a knee setback did the same in 2021.

That is why he was placed on waivers this offseason. Now he is joining the Bears.

Make no mistake. The Bears aren’t hurting at running back. David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert are a capable 1-2 punch. What both of them lack is true explosiveness. Particularly in the passing game. This is where Darrynton Evans might help if he can stay healthy. His speed is legitimate, and his kick returner background showcases his ability after the catch. It all comes down to whether he can stay healthy.

If he can, then the Bears just got themselves a talented weapon for cheap. Somebody that gives them depth at both running back and kick returner. It is the kind of low-risk-high-reward move Poles talked about making in free agency. The Kansas City Chiefs were known for doing similar things. A small move with significant potential. A possible Cohen replacement at a fraction of the price. Smart football business.
