It’s hard to tell what else Allen Robinson has to do for recognition. The guy has had Blake Bortles and Mitch Trubisky as his quarterbacks during his career. Yet he’s managed to produce two seasons of at least 1100 yards including the 1,147 he posted last season. The guy is one of the sharpest route runners in the NFL with an uncanny knack for making those big, tough catches in key moments. Yet nobody seems to believe he’s any good. Something that teammate Danny Trevathan has had enough of.

It started back in April when former safety Ryan Clark ran through his list of what he felt were true #1 wide receivers. When asked if Robinson was on that list, he simply said, “No.” That lit off a firestorm of responses, but Clark stood his ground. He wasn’t alone for long. A couple of months later, Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson declared Robinson needs to be “more consistent” in order for the Bears offense to do better in 2020. A statement that baffled many including the receiver himself.

Things reached a fever pitch recently when ESPN released their list of the top 10 wide receivers in the NFL. Not only was Robinson left off that list, but he also wasn’t even an honorable mention. Something afforded to A.J. Green who didn’t even play in 2019. Odell Beckham Jr. is #4 and Robinson topped him in both yards and touchdowns. Trevathan, having witnessed all this, finally had enough and decided to speak out.

Danny Trevathan is obviously biased but also not wrong

Look it’s hardly a surprise Trevathan would go to bat for Robinson. They’re teammates. Backing each other up is kind of what they do. At the same time, it isn’t like the linebacker is out of line. He is well within reason to be upset. Robinson has probably done more with less than any wide receiver in the NFL. People talk about Julio Jones, Michael Thomas, and DeAndre Hopkins as the cream of the NFL crop.

Just look at who’s been throwing them the ball most of their careers. Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, and Deshaun Watson. Tyreek Hill has had Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes. Davante Adams has Aaron Rodgers. It’s hard not to feel like those guys get more respect not because of their talent but because of the popularity of the QBs who throw them the football.

No wonder the hashtag #FreeAllenRobinson pops up from time to time. If he can produce as he has with Bortles and Trubisky, just imagine if he had an actual above-average QB slinging him the ball.
