Eddie Goldman became one of the most prominent NFL players to opt out of playing this year over COVID-19 concerns on Tuesday. The Chicago Bears were informed by him first via email and them phone call before the news went public. Both GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy admitted it’s a difficult loss but also completely understand his decision. He has the full support of the team and will be welcomed back next season.

The big question moving forward is what do they do to fill that void? Pace was asked this during a long Zoom call updating the status of the team. Per usual, the GM didn’t commit to anything outright. He stated the Bears like the status of their depth on the defensive line and its ability to adapt to Goldman’s exit. He specifically mentioned backup John Jenkins being able to step up and the presence of defensive line coach Jay Rodgers as reasons for optimism.

That said, Pace didn’t close the door on a possible move coming in the near future. The Bears are doing their research and it sounds like they could grab somebody as the season draws closer. Perhaps when certain players they have their eye on become available.

Eddie Goldman is hard to replace but not impossible

Make no mistake. Goldman was one of the most underrated defensive linemen in the NFL. Nose tackles that can do what he does are difficult to find. Replacing him this late in the offseason is a major headache. That said, it isn’t impossible. Stopping the run is still a big part of NFL success but it’s not an absolute necessity because of how pass-happy teams are these days.

All the Bears have to do is find a way to make sure they don’t get gashed repeatedly each week. Find a guy who won’t get bulldozed on every snap. There are players out there who fit this description. Damon Harrison is one that stands out. More could join him in the coming weeks when teams start cutting down their rosters.

One can rest assured Pace and the Bears will be ready to pounce if necessary.
