The Chicago Bears don’t have many offensive weapons they can count on. So any time they lose somebody, it’s going to be felt more than normal. It’s especially tough when that weapon is the guy that guides the identity of the entire offense. Khalil Herbert has been terrific this season for the Bears, sparking their ground attack to #1 in the NFL at 6.0 yards per carry. His efforts are a big part of why Justin Fields has killed opponents all year with his designed runs and play action fakes. Now the team will have to figure out life without him as the running back went on Injured Reserve with a hip injury.
This will put added pressure on David Montgomery to carry the load moving forward. He’s had a difficult stretch lately, averaging 3.55 yards per carry. It’s evident he doesn’t quite mesh in the new offense as Herbert does. One can safely assume rookie Trestan Ebner will get more action as well. Depending on how they do, it may force the Bears to open up their passing offense more than they have this season. That means a heavier workload for Darnell Mooney, Cole Kmet, and new arrival Chase Claypool.
The Chicago Bears could seek outside running back help.
If they’re not confident Ebner is ready (2.56 yards per carry), they do have a few interesting options to consider on the veteran market. Among them are former Pro Bowler Phillip Lindsay, Carlos Hyde, Devontae Booker, Ryquell Armstead, and Alex Collins. It is also possible they promote Darrynton Evans from the practice squad to fill the gap. While most of the alternatives aren’t great, it should be enough to keep things stable. Montgomery is a good player. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy may have to adjust the scheme to fit his style more.
The good news is the Chicago Bears may not need the ground game as much this week. They face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, who have the worst pass defense in the NFL. P.J. Walker hung 300 yards on them a few weeks ago. If the offensive line can give Fields some protection, he has a chance to win that game with his arm. Hopefully Herbert will be 100% by the time he returns because they’re going to need him against Buffalo and Philadelphia in December.
