Bears Execs Reveal When They Knew David Montgomery Was Their Guy

-

GM Ryan Pace has said in the past that he never goes into a draft singularly focused on any one prospect. He keeps an open mind and goes for the best players on the board. That helps explain why he’s had such considerable success with the Chicago Bears. However, does he follow this credo all the time? His own subordinates revealed this was not the case with David Montgomery.

Director of College Scouting Mark Sadowski joined a panel of Bears front office executives to talk about the inner workings of the team at the 100th anniversary celebration. Most of the discussion centered around the Khalil Mack trade. Not surprising since it was easily the biggest landmark moment of Pace’s career. One that launched the Bears into the Super Bowl contender window.

However, Sadowski revealed some interesting information regarding new Bears draft pick. Apparently the team became so enamored with the running back after meeting him that Pace asked point-blank whether he’d be available to them at #87 overall. Sadowski wasn’t sure and so asked a higher power for help.

Bears made sure they got their guy in David Montgomery

People know the story by this point. The 3rd round arrived on Day 2. Montgomery continued to slip down the board but it was becoming apparent that a run on running backs was nearing. Sensing that the Buffalo Bills were primed to take up at #74, Pace couldn’t wait any longer. He moved up in a trade with the New England Patriots to the #73 slot and made sure to get their guy.

Given the videos that have showcased the type of personality Montgomery has, it isn’t surprising the Bears were instantly taken with him. He is exactly the type of player they covet. Not only talented but hard-working, competitive, and more interested in the success of the team than himself. They feel he is another integral piece to the championship puzzle.

It would seem Papa Bear answered their prayers on that one.
