Belief Growing That Chicago Bears Plan to Turn Up Heat on Trubisky

-

It’s still difficult for Chicago Bears fans to get a grasp on what the team has planned for 2020 at quarterback. Thus far they’ve only seen part of it as head coach Matt Nagy completely revamped his coaching staff. Out were the younger or college-themed names like Mark Helfrich and Kevin Gilbride. In came a massive dose of NFL experienced names. Two of them featuring QB-heavy backgrounds in offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo.

Together with the promotion of Dave Ragone to passing game coordinator, the message is pretty obvious. The Bears are dead set on getting that position playing a lot better next season. Come hell or high water. The lingering issue is whether that plan involves Mitch Trubisky. Or a better way to put it is only Mitch Trubisky. GM Ryan Pace made it clear the initial decision is for the former #2 pick to remain the starter next season.

However, there is a growing belief in sources close to the team that he will not be alone. The Bears absolutely plan to make changes to the position. Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray will both be out of contract come March. Adam Jahns, the Bears insider for The Athletic, made it clear he thinks there will be at least one new face in that quarterback room before the offseason is over.

Chicago Bears still like Trubisky but no longer trust him

People always look at these situations in black and white. Either the Bears should stick with Trubisky or declare he’s not the guy and move on. It’s never that simple. There is a genuine belief by many in the locker room including Nagy and Pace that the young quarterback still has time to realize his potential. Hopefully, a revamped coaching staff and a retooled offense can help him. At the same time, there is a sense of broken trust from what happened in 2019.

Trubisky regressed badly. There were far too many times where he just looked overmatched by the moment and was unable to raise his game to help the team dig out of its struggles. He hasn’t played well against good teams and still makes fundamental mistakes that were present during his rookie year. The Bears can’t afford to wait on him forever. That is why they could seek out another quarterback. Somebody to push him on the depth chart.

One thing to keep in mind is the new additions to the coaching staff give Chicago significant connections to several veterans who might be available this offseason. Names like Andy Dalton, Nick Foles, and Ryan Tannehill. Anyone of them might be seen as a legitimate threat to Trubisky were they to end up on the roster.
