Former Bear Explains Why Matt Nagy Will Fail as Head Coach

-

It seems the shine is off the apple for Matt Nagy now. After going 12-4 his first year, the young Chicago Bears head coach is under the gun more than ever in 2019. Not only is his team 3-4, but his vaunted offense is also among the worst in the NFL in both yards gained and points scored. Worst of all, his quarterback has regressed badly. Mitch Trubisky looks every bit as lost and ineffective as a passer as he did as a rookie. He still doesn’t read defenses well and even worse has stopped using his legs to make plays.

Plenty of fans have lost their faith in Nagy and it seems some former Bears players have too. One of them is Dennis McKinnon. The longtime wide receiver has never been shy about sharing his opinion about anything related to the team. In fact, he just released a tell-all book called “Silky D Bares All” where he fires a number of shots at former colleagues. This includes accusing Mike Ditka of placing a bet on William Perry to score a TD in the Super Bowl.

His comments didn’t let Nagy off the hook either. He once likened the young coach to Joe Maddon. Someone who is a bit too chummy with his players. So one shouldn’t be surprised that McKinnon didn’t hold back on McNeil & Parkins on 670 The Score when asked for his assessment of the Bears coach.

“Nagy has been exposed. Just because you were in the Andy Reid system in Kansas City and Andy Reid is a genius doesn’t make you a genius because you were on the same coaching staff.”

Matt Nagy offense isn’t fooling anybody to him

McKinnon also called Nagy’s offense nothing but “smoke and mirrors.” He’s not fooling anybody. If he can determine what the Bears offense is doing each snap, then the opposition absolutely can as well. His quarterback not being able to read defenses only makes matters worse. If Nagy wants to salvage this offense he needs to “run the god damn ball” with David Montgomery. The Bears traded up to get this guy. He’s a rookie. He should get fed until he can’t go anymore.

Suffice to say McKinnon is not in the Nagy Fan Club. He doesn’t feel the head coach has the ability to discipline his players enough to correct their ongoing mistakes or adjust the offense properly to conceal how ineffective his quarterback is. Does this mean he will ultimately be a failure? Not necessarily. Nagy has already begun to adjust the offense away from Trubisky and is definitely a leader of men. That was never in question.

Might things be different if he had a slightly more capable quarterback? This is the question that remains unanswered.
