Chicago Bears Jarvis Landry Rumors Get Another Strong Push

-

The Chicago Bears Jarvis Landry rumors began months ago when the 2017 season ended. It seemed apparent at that point the 24-year old wide receiver was going to hit the open market. He had reached any sort of common ground on a contract extension with the Miami Dolphins. More than that his style of play didn’t seem to mesh with head coach Adam Gase’s offense.

That didn’t stop the Dolphins though. They placed the franchise tag on him anyway. For a moment it looked like someone in the building had changed their mind. However, that didn’t last long. Word soon came out that Miami was merely using the tag as a means to execute a trade. It’s clear they wish to get something back in return for losing Landry.

Something more than the likely third round compensatory pick he’d yield upon signing with a new team. Either way, it seemed like the Bears’ hopes were dashed. While they had the money to secure his services, trading a higher draft choice for Landry doesn’t seem doable for them. At least that’s what most thought.

Chicago Bears Jarvis Landry pursuit isn’t over yet

Landry and the Dolphins met at the scouting combine this week to discuss plans. Landry was granted permission to talk with other teams about a possible trade. If and when he found a potential suitor, he’ll be required to sign the franchise tag in order to execute the deal. According to insider Josina Anderson, two teams have emerged in the early running as possible destinations.

It’s likely there will be more but things got interesting from there. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald confirmed that the trade explorations had begun and he named one team that stood out above others for the moment.

“The Dolphins are seeking a draft pick or a player in exchange for Landry. Chicago is among teams that has emerged as a possibility.”

There is no surprise the Bears would be interested. When you had the worst passing offense in the NFL a year ago, it makes sense you’d seek out every avenue possible to upgrade at wide receiver. Landry is the best option on the table outside of maybe Allen Robinson who may also get tagged in Jacksonville. Landry is younger and already a two-time Pro Bowler.

Are the Bears a favorite to get him though?

What everybody wants to know is the simple answer. Do the Bears have a legitimate shot at him. A source informed me that while the team is definitely in on the sweepstakes, the odds aren’t looking favorable at this time.

“Yes, the Bears are one of the two teams talking to Miami. Can’t say for sure they won’t be his trade home but the feeling is he’s going elsewhere.”

There is something key to remember here. It’s not only draft compensation the Bears have to worry about. They also have to sign Landry to an extension. Rumors have hinted he’s seeking somewhere around the $15 million per year mark. That would put him on the same level as A.J. Green. Is Landry the same threat as Green? Not really, no. Last but not least, would Landry even want to come to Chicago?

The Bears haven’t had a winning season since 2012. It seems hard to fathom he’d willingly come here if another team with a more recent track record of success was also interested. Just something to keep in mind as this process plays out.
