Ranking The 5 Worst Chicago Bears QB Depth Charts of All-Time

The offseason is only half over and already Chicago Bears fans are left wondering. Could 2017 go down as the worst quarterback depth chart this team has ever had? On the surface it’s not exactly the most enticing group. Mike Glennon, a former third round pick turned failed starter and then backup. Mark Sanchez, a former first round pick turned failed starter and then journeyman backup. Finally Connor Shaw, a former undrafted free agent who flamed out in Cleveland and broke his leg last year.

What exactly about this group inspires any sort of confidence that the Bears will be better in 2017? Mind you they just got done finishing 3-13. It shouldn’t be that hard to improve on such a record. That’s how low the expectation bar has been set. So if Chicago does not make a meaningful move in the draft, this is what they have.

The best minds in the world couldn’t sell that. Then again, even this group might not qualify as one of the five worst in franchise history. That should give people an idea of just how bad the quarterback play has gotten in this city over the decades.

REPORT: Chicago Bears Cornerback Deiondre Hall Arrested In Iowa

The 2017 season is not getting off to the most ideal start for Chicago Bears corner Deiondre Hall. Word is the second-year man and former fourth round pick was arrested by police in Cedar Falls, Iowa following a confrontation with local police. Details remain somewhat unclear at the moment but both Hall and Packers cornerback Makinton Dorleant were both hauled away in cuffs.

KWWL News had the initial story.

“According to the Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, Deiondre Hall and Makinton Dorleant were arrested Saturday night in Cedar Falls.

Hall was cited for disorderly conduct, public intoxication, and interference.

Makinton Dorleant was cited for interference.”

The story may not have ended there though. Word is things may have gotten pretty heated that resulted in officers having to use force in order to take control of the situation.

“According to witnesses, Cedar Falls police and Black Hawk County sheriff’s deputies were called to College Hill late Saturday night.

They say they saw kids arguing with officers, and they also report seeing and hearing one person being tased.”

It was later indicated by those same witnesses that they believe Hall was the one tased. No matter how one spins it, this is not a good look for Hall in any light. He was already feeling the pressure with the addition of several new cornerbacks to the roster this offseason. No doubt Bears management and the coaching staff won’t be happy that he was caught up in something so irresponsible. One can only hope it’s not as bad as it sounds. Otherwise he could be in big trouble.

REPORT: Tampa Bay Rays Interested In Acquiring White Sox Peter Bourjos

As Opening Day quickly approaches, the Chicago White Sox still have multiple trade assets who have yet to be dealt.

As the White Sox look to add more young talent to their rapidly growing farm system, the team is expected to deal from their glut of veterans. Jose Quintana, David Robertson, Todd Frazier, Melky Cabrera and others could all be had for the right price.

While Quintana has been getting the most hype among the team’s trade pieces, it appears another White Sox is beginning to draw interest.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times recently wrote an article detailing ten things to know about the Rays entering the 2017 season. Inside that article he wrote:

The Rays are looking to add another right-handed bat, possibly a shortstop (with Beckham going back to the planned utility role before Duffy’s setback) but most likely an outfielder, even better if he can back up in center and has options. Finding one to check all boxes will be hard, so expect to hear lots of names, from Bryce Brentz, Peter Bourjos, Austin Jackson, Rob Refsnyder and Justin Ruggiano to even ex-mate B.J. Upton if dumped by Toronto. If they get one, that could force the decision for a utility infield spot between out-of-options Nick Franklin and promising prospect Daniel Robertson. If they don’t, Michael McKenry could be in the mix as the extra bat.

According to Topkin, the Tampa Bay Rays are interested in acquiring White Sox center fielder Peter Bourjos.

Bourjos has been in the MLB for the past seven seasons playing for the Angels, Cardinals and Phillies. He has hit .243 with 37 home runs, 149 RBIs and 61 stolen bases over 713 major league games.

Bourjos was expected to backup prospect Charlie Tilson in center field to begin the season. However with Tilson now injured, it appears as if Bourjos will begin the year as the White Sox starter in center; assuming he isn’t moved.

The 29 year old had an impressive Spring Training, hitting .333 with three triples. Tampa Bay certainly took notice and is now showing interest in the White Sox outfielder.

What Would It Cost?

Before even getting into Bourjos fit on the Rays, it’s important to note just how much the South Siders could fetch for the outfielder.

White Sox fans have been spoiled by the Chris Sale and Adam Eaton trades. The team was able to acquire four top prospects in Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez. Add in the potential prospects Chicago will get from a Jose Quintana trade and the White Sox are set to have one of, if not the best farm system in the MLB.

However Bourjos will not getting the Sox a top 100 prospect. In fact the team would be lucky to get a prospect that’s ready to contribute in the next three years.

Yes he is having a great Spring and yes he is only 29, but he is unproven. He has been unable to sustain consistent success at the MLB level. Of course 2017 could be the year that all changes, but Tampa Bay isn’t going to give up top prospects for an outfielder with question marks; especially if he is used in strictly a bench role.

Perhaps the White Sox could ask for catcher Curt Casali in a trade. Tampa recently signed Derek Norris and plan on holding on to Jesus Sucre until Wilson Ramos returns. Casali is only a career .195 hitter, but he showed off his power potential by hitting 10 home runs in 38 games in 2015. If the Rays offer Casali and another low level prospect with upside, it could be enough for Bourjos.

Trades will always get fans blood boiling as they try to figure out the best possible return package. But remember that Bourjos is a bench piece and won’t draw much more than lottery tickets.

Solid Fit

Topkin is adamant that the Rays are looking to add another right handed hitter. Per Roster Resource, Tampa Bay is projected to have just four righties in their starting lineup and just two on their bench.

In terms of their bench, Daniel Robertson will likely make the roster as a backup infielder due to Tim Beckham’s recent injury. Rickie Weeks has had a strong Spring Training, hitting .290 with three home runs and 10 RBIs. However going on 32 he may be better suited to back up first base rather than the outfield.

Bringing in Bourjos gives the Rays an outfielder who can realistically play all three outfield positions. He adds a bit of speed and could hit towards the top of the lineup when need be.

Having Mallex Smith as a left handed option off the bench and Bourjos as a right hander, Tampa Bay should be well situated for any pitching matchup thrown at them. The Rays would also have the depth necessary to combat an unexpected outfield injury.

It would be interesting to see how the Rays configured their 25 man roster if they added Bourjos, They would likely have to carry a five man bench if they wish to keep both Weeks and Bourjos. But if Tampa Bay is looking for a cheap right handed bat, the White Sox outfielder should be towards the top of their wishlist.

Author’s Reaction

At this stage of the game it would be a shock to see Bourjos traded. With Opening Day so close the White Sox may feel more comfortable letting him start in center rather than a prospect such as Jacob May or Adam Engel.

If the Rays were to blow Rick Hahn away then of course he would move him. But that likely isn’t the case, meaning that Bourjos will stay on the South Side for now.

While a deal seems unlikely for now, a Bourjos to Tampa trade is something that could happen later down the line. If May or Engel were to impress in AAA, perhaps the White Sox feel more comfortable with them starting. If that’s the case then Hahn could trade Bourjos.

There’s also a chance that Bourjos impresses in the starting role, increasing his value. If the Rays are still interested then there’s a chance the White Sox add a prospect of value for him.

The big takeaway here is that Peter Bourjos is drawing trade interest from Tampa Bay. If the Rays still need a right-handed bat by the All Star break there’s a chance the White Sox outfielder is moved from the Windy City to the Sunshine State.

Ian Happ’s Incredible Spring Is Forcing The Cubs Hand

The Cubs current roster is at 36, with 11 players still in the conversation for about two or three open roster spots. What many thought would be an open and closed case for the final bench spots has turned into a gripping debate between taking a role player or adding a prospect to the roster.

With players like Tommy La Stella and Matt Szczur on this roster, both seemed like easy selections for Maddon to add on to his bench. But, with Miguel Montero, Javier Baez, and Albert Almora or Jon Jay all with daily reserved seats on the Cubs bench, the club is in need of a left handed-hitting bat to use for pinch hitting purposes, particularly one that plays the infield. And while La Stella makes the most sense, and with the Cubs reportedly trying to trade Szczur, the decision is not that simple.

For those who may be unaware, the Cubs No. 2 overall prospect Ian Happ is tearing up Mesa, AZ right now. And while everyone expected his spring training appearance as nothing more than a meet and greet of the actual major league ball club, Happ is making it difficult for the Cubs to send him back to the minors.

Get To Know The Bears’ Draft Prospects: Non-QB Edition

chicago bears

Now that NFL free agency has largely settled down, teams have shifted their attention to preparing for the NFL Draft.

As the annual hoopla surrounding this wonderfully crazy event ups its gear into ridiculousness, the Chicago Bears are among a select few teams furiously figuring out what the hell to do with the draft position that they are in.

The Bears have the third overall pick. They need to find their quarterback of the future, and they need to continue to find their future stars at other positions as they build their team’s core foundation. Yes, the draft is 100% a mega-crapshoot and there’s no way to really judge a draft until a couple years in. But still, this is one of the deepest drafts in terms of positional talent the league has seen in many years – but the fanfare surrounding the quarterback position is suboptimal.

So, because of this, there is no real consensus on what Chicago will do with their pick. Will they select a QB? Will they go best available player, which would more than likely be on the defensive side of the ball? Will they trade the pick? Nobody knows.

But while there is no consensus, patterns have emerged as to whom experts think the Bears might select. A large majority think they’ll go with defense if they keep the pick, whereas the rest think they’ll bite the bullet and take their QB, because there’s no guarantee that anyone they like would be available in the second round – mediocre QB class or not.

So, who are the players that the Bears might be interested in and what should we know about them? Let’s take a look.

Note: In this edition, we’ll ignore the quarterback position. And no, Myles Garrett isn’t falling to the Bears, so we won’t discuss him either.

Former Chicago Bulls Champion Rips Derrick Rose

One of the unsung heroes of the second Chicago Bulls threepeat championship run in the 1990s was Ron Harper. He was a top notch defender in those days. A role he surprisingly embraced after being a primary scorer with the Los Angeles Clippers for so many years. He knows what it means to sacrifice in order to help the team win.

He also won two more titles with the Lakers after his time in Chicago. So the guy might know something about what it takes to win in the NBA. He also knows what championship players tend to look like, which was why his comments regarding former Bulls superstar Derrick Rose were as blunt as they were biting. According to TMZ Sports, it seems like Harper is not a believer in the idea Rose will ever win a title.

Indeed that laser-like focus required of most championship players was part of Rose early in his career. It was evident in everything he did. However, it seems like something began to change after he started suffering his knee injuries. Though still working hard, his drives seemed to wane. He grew more concerned about being there for his family and steadily his productivity began to decline.

It finally culminated in him being traded to the New York Knicks. Though he’s averaging 17.9 points per game this season, it’s a hollow number. His effectiveness is nowhere near the level it was six years ago when he claimed MVP honors. He may end up having a decent run in the Big Apple, but it’s growing clear that his peak days are already behind him.

Given the state of the Knicks franchise, Harper is likely right.

Gunman Open Fires Outside Cubs Hotel In Las Vegas

via LA Times

According to several media reports, a lone gunman opened fired on a double-decker bus right outside the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas yesterday. The Chicago Cubs players and team personnel are staying in that hotel for a two-game series against the Reds. The Cubs routinely make the trip to Cashman field and have recorded 18 sellouts over the last 12 seasons.

“Two people were taken to the hospital after the shooting, University Medical Center spokeswoman Danita Cohen said. One died, and the other was in fair condition, Cohen said. That person suffered minor injuries, police said.

According to top10casinowebsites.net, Former NBA player Scot Pollard, who was also staying at the Cosmopolitan, told The Associated Press by phone that he was at a bar at the hotel-casino around 11 a.m. when he saw several people, including staff, running through the area toward the casino and repeatedly screaming “get out of the way.” After he was told that the area would be closed, he went back to his room, which oversees the Strip.” (Sports Illustrated)

Adam Nissen, Cubs analyst for Sports Mockery is also in Vegas working a credential for our media organization. He missed this situation by 20 minutes when returning to the hotel after getting something to eat.

“The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Cubs players boarded two buses minutes after the shooting took place, just prior to the ensuing police lockdown. The Cubs later played the Reds nearby. The shooter was arrested during the game.”

The unidentified suspect was described by Las Vegas Metropolitan Police as a local resident in his 50s. Assistant Sheriff Tom Roberts said the man behaved as if he had “some mental issues” as SWAT team negotiators tried to coax him out of the bus after most of the passengers had streamed off it.

The Cubs Are Trying To Trade Matt Szczur

The Cubs have an embarrassment of riches after winning the World Series last year. With a roster stacked at almost every single position, the Cubs are just sorting out the final bench spots this spring.

One those players on the proverbial roster bubble is 27-year-old outfielder Matt Szczur, who has been constantly bouncing between Triple A Iowa and the major league club. While Szczur possesses a decent bat alongside solid defense and base-running, Szczur’s greatest asset to the Cubs was his options.

Now that Szczur has officially run out of minor league options, the Cubs have to decide between keeping the right-handed hitting Szczur as a fifth outfielder, the lefty infielder Tommy La Stella, or one of the younger pieces the Cubs have in their system (cough, cough Ian Happ).

Of course the Cubs could always carry a shorter bullpen, but that option seems unlikely, especially to keep a right-handed depth outfielder like Szczur. Now, it is worth mentioning that Joe Maddon has made it known to everyone that he loves Szczur, which makes sense because he does all the things Maddon loves. However, rumors were circulating that the Cubs might be interested in moving on from Szczur.

Well, the rumors are starting to gain some traction, and it could be close to the end of Matt Szczur’s time in Chicago.

Richard Panik Makes MacKenzie Eat His Fist

So the Blackhawks had a whooping put on them tonight. The only highlight for the team was Richard Panik fighting Florida Panther Derek MacKenzie.

The officials lost control of this game early and the Panthers kept pouring goals in. This was going to happen.

Panik started out slow in the fight but ended up with a really good showing in his fight with MacKenzie. The refs took an extremely long time to step in which is uncommon this season. Maybe they felt they could get this game under control if they did let it go.

Fun, but it’s an easy way to get hurt before the playoffs. Thankfully, Panik didn’t. The Blackhawks can use his scoring and presence.

Watch and enjoy Pat Foley’s excitement and play by play of this fight.

Pat Foley Really Sticks It To The Florida Panthers

I love it when Pat Foley has strong feelings on a subject. He is usually right and it leads to epic rants. This time he blasted the Florida Panthers management and for good reason.

Last season the Panthers had the best season in team history but were bested in the first round of the playoffs. Immediately following the series the GM Dale Tallon was fired.

Foley and Tallon were longtime broadcast partners in Chicago before Tallon became the Blackhawks’ GM. So of course, this move was not well received by Foley. You can hear it in the video.

Pat Foley is not wrong in his feelings. Florida continued their poor management by firing their head coach Gerard Gallant a month into this season. To make matters worse, they made him find his own way home.

Class act that Florida Panthers organization.
