WATCH: Anthony Rizzo Gets Choked Up After Huge Donation To Children’s Hospital

PHOTO: Chicago Tribune

I feel like I’ve written 1,000 stories on Anthony Rizzo’s generosity when it comes to his work fighting childhood cancer and ya know what?

It never gets old talking about it so here’s story 1,001.

Earlier today, the Cubs first baseman delivered on a promise that he made back in May that he would donate $3.5 million to Lurie Children’s hospital. Part of the ceremony was unveiling the “Rizzo Family Waiting Room” on the 18th floor of the hospital which was highlighted by a special ribbon cutting ceremony. It was after the ribbon was cut that Rizzo started to speak and became overrun by emotion.

“I remember sitting with my mom saying we were going to do this 10 years ago. And it’s just a little step toward our mission,” the Cubs first baseman said.

Everyone knows Rizzo beat cancer back in 2008 and has since dedicated a ton of time helping the families of children with cancer both financially and emotionally.

As it turns out, today was a day that Rizzo himself needed some emotional support.

I know it goes without saying but if you ever root against Anthony Rizzo, you’re probably not a very good person.

Week 1 Status of Kyle Long and Pernell McPhee Just Became Clearer

kyle long and pernell mcphee

Everybody knew going into the 2017 season that the Chicago Bears would be defined by the health of their roster. It was decimated a year ago with over 20 players ending up on injured reserve. Estimates say only one other team has suffered worse losses in over a decade. It’s hard to win football games that way. So of course keeping guys healthy was a major offseason focus. So far only Cameron Meredith is their biggest loss. Right now though all eyes are on Kyle Long and Pernell McPhee.

Both are considered vital to team efforts this year. Long of course being the Pro Bowl guard he is. McPhee showcasing his value as a pass rusher when on the field. To date the Bears have offered little in the way of clarity on whether or not those two will be available for the opener against Atlanta on September 2nd.

Back at practice for the first time since their victory over the Titans in week three of the preseason, the fog is starting to lift.

Kyle Long and Pernell McPhee status for opener crystallizing

First the bad news. Or rather the no news at all. It was hinted in on uncertain terms that this would have to be the week McPhee was taken off the PUP list. It would be a clear cut sign he was progressing in his rehab from knee surgery. Not seeing that happen would likely mean he’d stay on the list going into the season.

This would mean he’d have to miss the first six games of the season. It would mark the second-straight time that’s happened to him. No doubt it puts added pressure on the Bears outside linebackers to shoulder the load without him. Of course it’s not set in stone yet but there’s been no announcement to this point. So it doesn’t look good.

Thankfully it’s not all bad. Head coach John Fox was able to declare that Long remains on target in his own recovery. If there are no setbacks in the coming two weeks, he hinted strongly the guard should be ready for the Falcons.

This means the Bears offensive line should be at close to full strength. Given how well its played even without Long this preseason, that is a great comfort. Jordan Howard and the running game should function well. Mike Glennon, love him or hate him, will have stout protection up the middle.

It may not be the ideal scenario Bears fans were hoping for, but it’s progress. At this stage that’s something.

Michael Kopech Might Be In Chicago Much Sooner Than Expected

On MLB.com, Michael Kopech’s listed ETA to the MLB is 2018, but that still figured to be after the All-Star break next year at the earliest. After recently earning a promotion to Triple-A Charlotte, it is evident that Kopech has progressed quicker than expected. Today, reports came out that he could be on the White Sox roster on Opening Day 2018.

With Hostetler being the head scout for the team, his words shouldn’t be taken lightly. The common theme for all the new White Sox prospects is that they would not be rushed, regardless of how good or bad the White Sox are doing. However, Kopech wasn’t supposed to make any starts in Triple-A this year. He forced the issue and earned the promotion. If he shows he can easily hold his own against MLB batters in Spring Training, he could force the White Sox hand and lock up a rotation spot quicker than anyone would have thought.

Based on the repetitive theme of not rushing prospects, I think Kopech would have to absolutely light it up in Spring Training to secure a roster spot on Opening Day. However, his stuff is that electric to where it wouldn’t come as a total surprise if he did dominate. Even if he doesn’t make the Opening Day roster, he could still be called up to Chicago before the All-Star break. For Kopech, that would still be considered well ahead of schedule.

Next year the White Sox are still probably going to be pretty bad. Most likely in the 70 win range. That doesn’t mean that they can’t still be fun to watch. A full year of Yoan Moncada, Reynaldo Lopez, and Lucas Giolito will be crucial to the development of the team. Add in the looming debut of Michael Kopech, who is the no. 1 pitching prospect in baseball, and suddenly you have the makings for a very fun season.

Get ready White Sox fans, it won’t be long until we see things like this on the South Side.

Chicago Bears: 5 Preseason MVPs Who Earned Roster Spots

chicago bears preseason

The preseason is never a determining factor for a football team but it can still be a proving ground for players. Particularly ones who may not be guaranteed a roster spot. That’s why the Chicago Bears preseason evaluations are so important. Head coach John Fox and his staff know the importance of 2017. If they have another rough season, odds are they could be fired. That makes getting the 53-man roster right all the more paramount.

So that begs the questions. Who among the fringe players did enough to cement their place on the roster? Final cuts will occur on September 2nd. This means they performed well enough to be assured that their names won’t be called when that time comes. Here are five MVPs who stepped up to the challenge.

Chicago Bears preseason MVPs:

#1:  Kendall Wright (WR)

A former first round pick of Tennessee, the Bears were hoping Kendall Wright could recapture some of the magic he had with offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains when they were together four years ago. So far in preseason it looks like their calculated risk is paying off. Wright has made a number of impact plays already.

He scored a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals and then converted three-straight third downs against his former team in Nashville. With Cameron Meredith going down to injury for the year, that merely made Wright’s place on the roster even more secure. He’s certain to see plenty of action now and appears ready for it.

#2:  Bradley Sowell (OT)

The lack of stats always makes it difficult for offensive linemen to stand out. In the case of Bradley Sowell it’s often the other way around. The less somebody’s name is mentioned, the better he must be playing. Aside from his brief stint as an emergency long snapper, Sowell has scarcely been mentioned at all across three games.

That’s because he’s blocked extremely well. Playing both left and right tackle, the veteran from Seattle has showcased an impressive ability in pass protection. It showed up on several occasions against Denver and Tennessee on some of Mitch Trubisky’s best throws. That includes the beautiful 45-yard TD on Sunday. Just watch #79 at right tackle.

#3:  Roy Robertson-Harris (DE)

This might be the biggest story of the preseason. Most people had forgotten Robertson-Harris by the start of this year. All they remembers was he’d been an undrafted free agent with lots of potential as an outside linebacker from UTEP. His failure to play last year due to illness problems made it seem like his chance had come and gone.

Instead the Bears plopped him on the NFI list and stashed him away. All the while they set about switching him from linebacker to defensive end. He went from 270 lbs to 290. The idea being he had the sort of length, athleticism and power that could make a top lineman in their system. Two sacks and a blocked punt later, it’s hard to argue with their reasoning.

#4:  Christian Jones (ILB)

Things are shaping up to be good for the Bears at inside linebacker. Danny Trevathan and Jerrell Freeman are the starters while Nick Kwiatkoski looks like an excellent primary backup. What many haven’t counted on is the sudden escalation of productive play by veteran Christian Jones. It seems he may have found his niche at last.

He’s been a steady performer throughout the preseason. Not only does he have seven tackles and a pass defense, he also continues to flash on special teams. The Bears came close to parting ways with him last year but decided to give him another chance. Seems that was a good decision as he’ll provide great depth and third phase assistance.

#5:  Kyle Fuller (CB)

It’s been quite the roller coast ride for the former first round pick. He went from prized heir to Charles Tillman to benched in the space of a year. Then he began to play up to his status in late 2015, only to see a knee injury knock him out last year. Coming into this season many weren’t sure whether he’d even make the final roster at all.

Fuller set about trying to change minds in preseason. He is showing more of an edge and consistency that he didn’t have for much of his prior performances. His tackling remains solid and he’s shown an ability to hold his own in coverage as well. Combined with an ankle injury to Prince Amukamara, his final chance to fulfill expectations is still alive.

Dwyane Wade & LeBron James Will Meet For Dinner This Week

dwyane wade lebron james meet dinner

Dwyane Wade and his wife Gabrielle Union returned stateside Tuesday night after a winding European vacation. When TMZ Sports caught up with Wade making his way out of LAX in Los Angeles, they asked him if he’s planning on teaming up with his pal LeBron James in Cleveland this season.

Check out Dwyane’s response in the video below:

Wade played it close to the vest, but did admit that he and LeBron have plans to meet up for dinner somewhere this week.

Bulls fans must be wondering what will be discussed at that dinner table. There’s been a lot of speculation recently that the former champion teammates with the Heat will unite again, this time with LeBron’s Cleveland Cavaliers. Wade and the Bulls front office haven’t engaged in any serious talks regarding a buyout yet. But the aging shooting guard – who’s owed $23.8 million this season – has expressed disinterest in finishing his contract in Chicago since they decided to trade Jimmy Butler and begin a rebuilding process.

For their part, Bulls executives Gar Forman and John Paxson firmly stated earlier this summer that any kind of buyout for Wade would have to benefit the organization moving forward. In other words, they would insist that Wade give some of that $23.8 million back in exchange for his freedom to play elsewhere. In a recent report, Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times sourced a claim that Dwyane would want at least $20 million of this season’s salary. That report also stated the Bulls front office doesn’t want to pay him anywhere close to that amount.

Will a talk with LeBron about making one last championship run together convince Dwyane to give up more of that money the Bulls owe him? It’s certainly possible. In the meantime, Bulls fans will have to wait and see what happens. According to multiple sources, the Bulls front office is in no hurry to grant Wade a buyout.

Kendall Wright Was Mic’d Up For Titans Game, Yes He Talked Lots of Trash

kendall wright

It wasn’t a coincidence that the Chicago Bears made Kendall Wright captain for the week three preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. He’d already made it clear weeks earlier that he was still angry that his former team basically froze him out of the offense over the past two years, feeling they never figured out how to use his skills. That was why he came to Chicago, to reunite with Dowell Loggains who was offensive coordinator during his best season there in 2013.

Was it any coincidence that he was selected to be mic’d up for this game? Of course not. The producers felt he was the most likely to do plenty of talking because of the history. He didn’t disappoint. From the early minutes of the game, Wright was jawing with former teammates and coaches alike. The trash talk was coming out hot.

Kendall Wright got his measure of revenge with his play

The icing on the cake for him came in the form of his play. On their first drive of the game, Chicago was backed up to their own 4-yard line. From there they methodically worked it down the field 96 yards to score a touchdown. Wright was arguably the most valuable part of that. He made three catches during the march for 35, all of them converting third downs for first downs.

It was an impressive showing and proof that the Bears were right to bring him in. Loggains showed he still knows how to utilize Wright properly. With Cameron Meredith out with his knee injury, he figures to get even more action in the offense than before. Don’t forget this young man is a former first round pick. He had 1,000 yards four years ago. He can play.

It’s not his fault the Titans lost sight of that truth.

Buzz On Akiem Hicks Contract Extension Just Got Interesting

akiem hicks

Charles Leno Jr. got his contract extension. Some questioned it, but steady left tackles are hard to come by in the NFL. At the end of the day most felt it was the right decision. In the eyes of fans that left one major item on the agenda for GM Ryan Pace. He needs to get the long-awaited Akiem Hicks contract extension done as well.

Week by week it’s becoming more apparent that Hicks might be the best free agent signing that Pace has made to date. The 27-year old was tremendous in 2016, notching seven sacks and being one of their best run defenders. All signs indicate that he could be in store for an even better year in 2017. Aside from Leonard Floyd he may be their best player on defense.

So it’s not a surprise he’s likely demanding a pretty big pay raise. He has a new agent in Drew Rosenhaus now. A man who’s done recent business in the past with Chicago, including linebacker Jerrell Freeman. Word is discussions are ongoing, but can a deal get done? No doubt Bears fans are afraid this can become another Alshon Jeffery situation.

Akiem Hicks contract extension likely to come very soon

The good news is it’s right about that time where extensions tend to happen. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune confirmed that much when discussing the Hicks situation. He believes that a deal is not only possible, but will happen sometime before the opener on September 10th.

“After the Bears put the finishing touches on a $38 million, four-year extension for left tackle Charles Leno, the most repeated question I received on Twitter was when a deal for defensive end Akiem Hicks was coming. If I had to wager a guess, and this is shooting from the hip, I think there is a good chance a deal is done before the season opener on Sept. 10.

Why?

This is prime season for contract extensions. Remember, the Bears did a new deal for left guard Kyle Long in the week of the season opener last year. They completed a new contract for outside linebacker Willie Young during training camp a little more than 12 months ago. They’ve been talking to Hicks’ agent Drew Rosenhaus, who attended the game on Sunday and said the sides remain in discussions. The biggest reason for optimism for a deal is, by signing an extension before Sept. 10, Hicks will remove the risk of injury during the season.”

Hicks deal would remove final big in-house deal of concern

There is plenty of reason for getting Hicks locked up as soon as possible. Of course his great play is the biggest part, but there’s also the need for a sense of calm going into the season. It’s hard to say that Jeffery’s contract issue wasn’t a distraction at times last year. Getting this done now will leave the Bears with zero contract issues of note to worry about.

Cameron Meredith with be a restricted free agent and he’s coming off that bad knee injury. Everyone else is on prove-it deals or can’t be considered high priority. Pace will be free to approach matters as he wishes rather than be shackled by one big negotiation.

Three Roster Moves The White Sox Will Make In September

Season-one of rebuilding the Chicago White Sox is winding down. The South Siders have tanked their way to the second worst record in Major League Baseball behind the downtrodden Philadelphia Phillies.

But there have been reasons to celebrate amidst a depressing season. Several elite prospects made their south-side debut to healthy fanfare. Yoan Moncada’s promotion alone boosted ticket sales creating a frenzy of merchandise hoarding on an unparalleled scale. Lucas Giolito notched his first big-league win on Sunday and owns a 2.77 earned run average over two starts in the show. Reynaldo Lopez also dazzled The Rate crowd before suffering what appears to be an innocuous back injury.

Still, there were other less brilliant appearances by other prospects. Carson Fulmer was lit up like a Christmas tree in his only start in the majors and promptly returned to Triple-A with a host of unanswered questions about his future with the White Sox. In the minors, heralded prospect Zack Collins developed well behind the plate but tipped the scales in the wrong direction with the bat.

Collins erupted early in his second tour at High-A collecting three hits in his first game with two doubles and posting a .333 batting average over the first week of the season. A tremendous dry spell followed and Collins closed his season at Winston-Salem with a .223 batting average.

Despite his dip in batting average, the slugger demonstrated his offensive production with a patient approach and improved his skills as a backstop by hosing 68 percent of base runners.

There were other less notable debuts as Jacob May failed to return early dividends, yet Adam Engel has been a ray of sunshine and appears to have claimed the center field duties for the foreseeable future. Nicky Delmonico has etched himself in the White Sox record books with early success and the list goes on.

With the September roster expansion on the horizon and a teaming farm system, there are several promotions and lineup changes that should be made in the next few weeks.

Expand The Rotation

Derek Holland has not become the lottery ticket many expected him to be. In fact, the only positive he has brought to the White Sox roster is starting every fifth day. And in that role, he hasn’t even consumed innings at the rate the White Sox needed him to. Mike Pelfrey has done a better job of absorbing innings and relieving the pressure on the bullpen. This is a deficiency Holland has recognized and should be applauded for accepting accountability.

His last start notwithstanding, he has been atrocious. He is a free agent at the end of the season and cannot be moved after Aug. 31. After consecutive appalling seasons as a starter, it appears Holland’s remaining value is in the bullpen. He has kept lefties at bay with a .232 batting average and could extend his career in a matchup role. Why not send him to the bullpen and give him a shot to audition for teams next season?

Doing so would open a rotation spot for Fulmer to sink or swim as a starter in the major leagues while extending the rotation to a sixth man would give Tyler Danish another whack at the show. Both pitchers are already on the 40-man roster and are likely to join the White Sox in September anyway.

Infield In

The infield is crowded with role players and prospects. Yolmer Sanchez and Tyler Saladino have served the organization well and deserve a fair shake at earning a starting position. Sanchez has a regular spot in the lineup but Saladino might have to ride the pine since Delmonico, Moncada and Matt Davidson appear to be the future.

While Moncada is on the D.L. – which could end up being the rest of the season – Saladino will get playing time, but Delmonico will rejoin the White Sox soon and Davidson is already back at the hot corner. Saladino’s value will manifest in platooning around the infield to rest regulars like Tim Anderson.

Danny Hayes seemed to be the likeliest candidate to earn a September call-up but he has chilled in the fall breeze batting .229 the last three months with only seven home runs. Casey Gillaspie is two years younger and despite a sluggish debut with Charlotte after getting caught in the Dan Jennings trade with Tampa Bay, he is batting .265 with two home runs over the last 10 games.

D.J. Peterson, a waiver claim from Seattle in early August, is already on the 40-man roster and will likely join the big-league squad as part of the late season shift, but the infield is already saturated and it doesn’t seem likely that many infielders will be raised from the minors to supplement as a designated hitter. Yet, the White Sox 40-man roster is approximately three players short and offers flexibility in the next few days.

Shifting The Outfield

Given the strength and age of the active roster, the White Sox will promote sluggers from Triple-A. May is already on the 40-man roster and likely to receive a call-up but the slew of other potential outfielders are a hodgepodge of vacillating value.

Cody Asche was demoted to the minors early in the season but has since batted .303 with 11 long balls. Asche is a free agent at the end of the season and doesn’t seem to fit the profile of who the White Sox want to promote.

Rymer Liriano, claimed off waivers from the Brewers in the offseason, should earn a promotion given his set of skills and his return from a horrific facial injury similar to the one Giancarlo Stanton suffered a few seasons back. Liriano only batted .255 this season but he has been a steady force since June batting .269 with 14 bombs.

The rest of the batch of outfielders in Triple-A does not serve the interests of the club to call up. But with the remaining roster spots, there could be a dark horse promotion from Double-A, Eloy Jimenez.

Birmingham has been eliminated from the postseason and will put a bow on 2017 on Sept. 4. If the White Sox give the slugger a major-league promotion on the fifth and keep him up through the end of the season, Jimenez will only spend 27 days of big-league service time.

It is a big leap for a 20-year-old player to make, but Jimenez is batting .347 in 13 games at Double-A with three home runs. He has three multi-hit games and posted back-to-back three hit affairs in his last two games. Jimenez is six for his last nine with two home runs.

This is an unlikely promotion considering Jimenez has only played 13 games above High-A and an altogether separate approach from what the Red Sox did with Moncada last season. Moncada had spent most the 2016 campaign in Double-A and was scheduled to begin 2017 in Triple-A.

Still, players occasionally make the jump to the majors from Double-A. It is an easier leap for pitchers than hitters, but Ryan Zimmerman made the jump in 2005 after only 63 games at Double-A in his first professional season.

It can be done. If Jimenez finds himself in a big-league clubhouse next week he won’t be there to watch. He is certain to play, albeit in a D.H. role, most likely.

Bears Defense Made Titans OT Taylor Lewan Throw a Hissy Fit

taylor lewan insane

The Chicago Bears defense played extremely well on Sunday against the Tennessee. They stiffled the Titans normally effective ground attack. DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry each averaged just 2.7 yards per carry. Marcus Mariota completed just 12 of his 21 passes and their offense failed to score any points until the fourth quarter. Needless to say this caused from frustration on their sideline. That and it apparently drove Taylor Lewan insane.

The big offensive tackle was an absolute frothy mess after the Titans finally scored their only touchdown. It was a three-yard shovel pass to Henry against the Bears third-string defense. Talk about humiliating, and Lewan knew. As he was walking off the field cameras caught him ripping his helmet off, yelling at teammates and then going full psycho by headbutting the helmet repeatedly.

Driving Taylor Lewan insane is fun but the bigger picture matters

That’s a scary man even from the safety of a TV screen. It’s impossible to imagine being up close. Well it seems the Bears defense wasn’t intimidated all that much. They had three sacks on the afternoon and were the aggressors from start to finish. That sequence by Lewan was simply his inner competitor coming to the realization that they’d just gotten their “glutes” kicked.

Odds are they’ll have better days but the big story is the Bears D itself. Despite still not quite being at full strength, it was able to put together a great performance against one of the better offenses in the NFL. So try to imagine what will happen if and when they finally get all the pieces in place. No doubt the coaches are salivating at the prospect. Until then though, they can feel content this unit is much deeper and better than a year ago.

The only thing left to say is, “Bring on the Falcons.”

Cameron Meredith Injury Could Be More Than Just the ACL

cameron meredith injury

The Chicago Bears wide receiver position might be one of the most snake-bitten in the NFL. This is not superstition either. Every time it appears like they have a superstar in the making, something terrible seems to go wrong. Alshon Jeffery suffered through injuries and suspensions after his Pro Bowl year in 2013. Brandon Marshall got himself run out of town. Marcus Robinson suffered a bad knee injury in 2001. Curtis Conway went down in 1997 after back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons and was never the same. Now the Cameron Meredith injury can join that sad list.

He was on his way to becoming one of the biggest success stories maybe in Bears history. A former college quarterback switches to wide receiver, goes undrafted, makes the team and rises to become their best on the roster. Meredith seemed destined for a big year in 2017. He was having a tremendous training camp and solid preseason. Then one low hit changed everything.

It was difficult to watch then and no less difficult now. Not only is this a body blow to the Bears offense, but it’s a tragic turn of events for a promising young player. After the game head coach John Fox confirmed the teams’ belief Meredith tore his ACL but will wait on MRI results. Unfortunately it could be even worse than that.

Former NFL doctor believes Cameron Meredith injury far more serious

Dr. David J. Chao used to work in the NFL and has a deep, comprehensive knowledge of every time of injury suffered by football players. He took time to review the video of the Meredith hit. Based on his long experience, his initial diagnosis was not good. In fact it may be worse than imagined.

“The Chicago Bears will be without their No.1 receiver this season – and perhaps beyond.

Video of Cameron Meredith going down after being tackled low in Sunday’s preseason game against the Tennessee Titans indicates he suffered a multi-ligament injury.

It is likely Meredith tore his ACL and MCL. Surgery will be required, at least for the ACL. Hopefully, his cartilage and meniscus were spared, but this is more than just an isolated ACL tear.

An air cast and cart being used for Meredith do not indicate fracture but instead significant knee ligament instability. On rare occasions, there is artery and nerve involvement, as this is essentially a partial knee dislocation. It does not appear that will be an issue in this instance.

However, there is no guarantee Meredith will return at the start of the 2018 season.”

Pressure falls on Ryan Pace to adjust

That’s sad, first and foremost. It means there’s a possibility that Meredith may never again reach the possible heights he was approaching before the injury. Though based on history it’s probably not a good idea to bet against him. Nonetheless this changes the future plans for Chicago moving forward.

They were already somewhat thin at wide receiver before this. With his future in question, it means GM Ryan Pace will almost certainly be aggressive trying to stack up at the position in 2018, if not sooner. Given the work he’s done in reloading this Bears roster, it’s fair to say that’s something he’s capable of.

Roster cuts will occur on September 2nd. Odds are the Bears might attack the waiver wire searching for help at the position. They may even consider making a trade depending on who’s available. Odds are more info will come out in the next week.
