Bears To Sign Top Free Agent Wideout

chicago bears 2018 free agent

It appears Mitch Trubisky has his number one target for 2018. According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Bears will sign free agent wideout Allen Robinson when free agency opens on Wednesday.

Check back in for further details from Bears insider Erik Lambert – who at this moment is dreaming of the countless corner fade routes Mitch and AR will hook for in the coming years – in the morning as he will, as usual, have the thorough scoop for you. Now go to bed you nocturnal goofballs. No one will sleep better than Mitch tonight.

Bears Could Be Close to Free Agency Home Run At Wide Receiver

chicago bears free agency

It seems Ryan Pace is feeling a little greedy these days. The Chicago Bears free agency plan undoubtedly included wide receivers. Such is the byproduct of having the worst passing offense in the NFL in 2017. Most expected the team to be intent on getting one of the top receivers on the market and then likely a second tier guy.

It’s not a bad plan at all. Combined with the anticipated return of Cameron Meredith from injury, it would make for a considerable improvement from last year. Except that doesn’t seem to be good enough for Pace. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears are in relentless pursuit of not one but two of the top receiving targets on the free agent market.

“Multiple sources say the Bears have identified the Rams’ Sammy Watkins as their top target at arguably their greatest position of need — wide receiver. Watkins, the fourth overall pick in the 2014 draft by the Bills, has averaged 15.9 yards per catch in his career. For the sake of comparison, that’s more than a yard better than former Bear Alshon Jeffery.

The Bears are also believed to have expressed interest in Jaguars wide receiver Allen Robinson, but he is coming off a torn ACL suffered in the season opener last year. Watkins would arrive healthy and as a certified speedster who would add a missing dimension to the offense.”

Chicago Bears free agency chances to nab both are actually solid

This is a potentially huge development for the Bears. Watkins and Robinson are considered by far the two best wide receivers in free agency. If Chicago were able to land just one of them it would be considered a success. Is it possible they might be trying to go for the clean sweep? A source reached out to me with the answer.

“The Bears want both Watkins and Robinson. Can’t really put a number on it so say 50-50 odds of getting Them.”

Both receivers aren’t even 26-years old yet. Despite their injury histories, they would present a monumental upgrade in talent for this Bears roster. Watkins had eight touchdowns last year and remains one of the more dangerous deep threats in the league. Robinson is a big body and a sharp route runner who can take over games at will. Their arrivals would erase the need to draft a receiver entirely, allowing the Bears to focus at other positions.

Artist Creates The Best Jake Arrieta Tribute Video You’ll See

In case you’ve been under a rock for the past 24-hours, Cubs great Jake Arrieta has decided to move on from the North Side. The former Cy Young winner inked a 3-year, $75 million dollar contract with the Philadelphia Phillies which officially turned the page on Arrieta’s time as a member of the Chicago Cubs.

There has been an outpouring of support and thank you videos from Cubs fans expressing their gratitude for Arrieta’s five years in Chicago all over social media. None of those videos, however, come close to what 23-year-old Austin Ploch created.

Austin is a artist who currently resides in Scottsdale, Arizona but was born and raised a Cubs fan about an hour and a half southwest of Chicago. He was at Arrieta’s first start with the Cubs and immediately became a fan of Jake’s. Arrieta must have been a fan of Austin’s as well since he asked Austin to personally paint him some other pieces to hang at ‘Casa de Arrieta.’

As a personal thank you to Arrieta, Austin created a time-lapse video which is part painting and part highlight clips. I don’t care how many Arrieta tribute videos you show me — this is the best of them all.

Chicago Bears Draft Hopes Getting a Boost From Unexpected Source

chicago bears draft

The Chicago Bears draft plans are unknown. That’s nothing new. Few GMs in the NFL have proven better at masking his intentions than Ryan Pace. His masterful maneuvers to get Mitch Trubisky last year are a perfect example. That said, at least one thing is known for sure about this upcoming event. The Bears aren’t taking a quarterback. This doesn’t mean the position won’t play a prominent part in what they do at #8 overall.

Believe it or not, it’s another team’s recent moves that could have a profound impact on their fortunes. The Buffalo Bills hatched a blockbuster trade Monday afternoon when they reached an agreement to send left tackle Cordy Glenn to the Cincinnati Bengals. In exchange, the Bills were allowed to move up from their 21st spot in the first round to #12 while the teams also swapped picks in later rounds.

This is a significant development. Buffalo is in the market for a quarterback after trading starter Tyrod Taylor to the Cleveland Browns. Most experts believe they won’t stay at #12 long. They currently hold the #22 pick as well, along with two picks in both the second and third rounds. This signals the near guarantee they plan to jump higher.

A Bills move up could greatly benefit the Chicago Bears draft

How does this affect the Bears? Basically, it means another QB-needy team will enter the top seven picks ahead of them, guaranteeing a top non-QB player slips further down the board. For example, experts believe the team to watch in a Bills trade is the Indianapolis Colts. They already have a QB and a ton of holes to fill across the rest of their roster. Buffalo would be able to get ahead of the Broncos (#5) and Jets (#6) who also need quarterbacks.

This suddenly alters the board in a big way. If the Colts move out of the #3 slot, that takes away one of the most likely landing spots for N.C. State pass rusher Bradley Chubb. Cleveland at #4, Denver at #5 and New York at #6 are less likely to take him due to more pressing needs at QB or on offense in general. The next spot that could be considered a lock for him is with Tampa Bay at #7, right in front of the Bears.

Chicago desperately needs help at edge rusher and the free agent market is thin. Not only that, but the class behind Chubb isn’t all that deep. So this would make for a big opportunity to put another blue chip talent across from Leonard Floyd. Pace certainly isn’t afraid to think bold trading up in the first round. He did it for Floyd and then for Trubisky. The good news here is it’d be on the cheaper side because a QB isn’t involved.

A future third rounder or a current and future fourth rounders could be enough to entice a deal with the Jets. This is just one scenario. Even if the Bears stayed put at #8, the likelihood increases that a top five talent slips to their spot if the Bills move up as expected.

Bears Mailbag – Will Chicago Finally Make A Bold Move?

chicago bears 2018 free agent

The NFL’s “legal tampering” period is upon us. As of 11am CST today, teams can begin meeting with and negotiating with free agents coming out of contract with other teams. Before now, teams could only contact and make decisions on their own players and free agents.

However, no deal can be officially finalized or announced until 3pm CST on Wednesday afternoon. That’s when the new league year officially begins. It’s a big week.

The Chicago Bears have plenty of decisions to make, both with their own upcoming free agents, players they are likely to cut, and improvements to make across the roster. This is a big offseason for Ryan Pace, and we should expect him to attack it with vigor.

As we prepare for the rumor mill and free agent frenzy to kick off into hyper-mode this week, I thought it’d be good to reach into our Bears Mailbag once again and field your questions. Thanks to everybody who submitted — always appreciate the participation.

I have to disagree with the notion that Ryan Pace doesn’t take risks or make bold moves. The trade for Mitch Trubisky last year was a massive gamble — he literally bet his career on that move. He also traded up for Leonard Floyd the previous year, and took a chance on Ray McDonald before McDonald destroyed his life by being an awful human being just days after signing with Chicago. Pace makes bold moves when he thinks it’s the right move for his team. But he’s certainly calculated.

I suppose it also depends on what you consider a bold move. Signing a big-name free agent is usually considered bold. As is trading up or down in the draft. As is trading for a particular player. And given the fact that the Bears have plenty of moves they need to make, you can bet that many of them will be considered risky.

That said, here are three pretty big moves that I’d like to see:

1. Sign Allen Robinson. I think this is pretty self-explanatory.

2. Draft Denzel Ward at 8th overall if Quenton Nelson isn’t there. Ward is the best cornerback in this draft, so from that point of view it isn’t really a “risk”. But Ward doesn’t fit the usual profile of corners that Vic Fangio likes to employ in his defenses. Fangio likes bigger corners with longer arms that are more “suited” for press coverage. Ward is slightly shorter, but man, he is a beast. Watching the way he’s able to stick to receivers like glue is an absolute joy. The Bears’ defense would be ridiculously better if Ward joins the defense opposite …

3. Kyle Fuller once he’s signed to a multi-year extension. Fuller is very good cornerback. He’s young. And his relationship with Fangio seems to be quite good. There’s no reason for the Bears to sit on signing him to a three or four year deal. Forget sitting on the transition tag — lock him up.

Mason with the double dip! Appreciate the participation.

If you’re asking for my rankings for both classes stacked with each other, which I’m assuming you are, they’re below. Also, I don’t think there were five QBs in last year’s draft worth comparing, to be honest. This QB class is much deeper, in my opinion, in the sense that there are more QBs with higher floors.

My rankings include raw talent, accuracy, decision making, and how I project them faring in the NFL. It’s all based on college tape. And I’ve also adjusted for any “red flags”. For example, overall I think Josh Rosen is a better prospect than Patrick Mahomes. But the reports of his commitment to football made him slip below Mahomes. These rankings are based on tape I’ve watched as of the NFL Combine.

P.S. I understand that my rankings may not be popular, but this is all based on college tape and pre-NFL stuff. So, for example, I’m not letting Deshaun Watson’s numbers in the NFL affect how I’d graded them before they played in the NFL.

1. Baker Mayfield
2. Mitch Trubisky
3. Sam Darnold
4. Patrick Mahomes
5. Josh Rosen
6. Mason Rudolph
7. Deshaun Watson
8. Kyle Lauletta
9. Josh Allen
10. Lamar Jackson

I want the Bears to come away with at least two WRs in this free agency period. So in addition to Robinson, one of Albert Wilson, Paul Richardson, or Jordan Matthews would certainly help steer this team’s talent level in the right direction. Wilson, who played under Matt Nagy in Kansas City, is rumored to be a favorite to land with the Bears, so that’s encouraging.

I’d also like the Bears to add some depth at EDGE. The Bears’ EDGE group is in shambles right now, and can use an infusion of talent. I’d like to see them go after Jeremiah Attaochu, Aaron Lynch, and even the recently released veteran Tamba Hali for depth purposes. This team needs talent and depth at EDGE in the worst way. No names should be off the table at this point. It’ll be prudent to watch roster cuts from other teams, but right now that’s the list of available players the Bears should be looking at.

Chicago should also look for depth along the defensive line, cornerback, and the offensive line. I expect the Bears to be very busy filling holes on the roster this upcoming free agency period. And then I expect them to infuse the roster with young, building block talent at various positions in the draft.

The offseason will be considered a fail if the Bears don’t come away with many of their roster holes filled before the draft. That doesn’t necessarily mean splashy signings are a necessity. What defines a splashy signing, anyway? A big name? Or a big contract? In that sense, I’m hoping the Bears sign Kyle Fuller to an extension that makes him a rich man. I’m also hoping they do what’s needed to secure the services of Allen Robinson. I wouldn’t consider it a failure if they didn’t, but it would certainly help the sentiment surrounding this team.

What really matters, though, is that whoever Pace brings in via free agency and the draft, is able to contribute at a high level right away. This past offseason was a disaster, with so many of the Bears’ free agent additions failing miserably. Chicago can’t afford that. They need difference makers and depth. If they don’t get those two things, then the Bears have failed.

Chicago Bears Might Be Going Balls to the Wall at Tight End

chicago bears free agency

It’s becoming clear that the Chicago Bears free agency approach, at least early on, is focused on offense. The rumors surrounding the wide receiver position have long been public knowledge. Allen Robinson? Sammy Watkins? Albert Wilson? Nobody is off the table. What many might be surprised about is how aggressive it seems GM Ryan Pace is being at another offensive position.

After signing Dion Sims in free agency last year and then spending a second round pick on Adam Shaheen, it felt like the Bears might be set at tight end for the immediate future. Then again the NFL is a fickle business. Things change fast in a year. Sims looks like he might get cut in the coming days. As for Shaheen, hopes are high for him but it appears the coaching staff might not be comfortable putting the position squarely on his shoulders.

To that end, the buzz coming out of multiple areas is the team is heavy in the tight end market with several names attached to them.

Jimmy Graham highlights early Chicago Bears free agency run

It seems Pace plans to dig into his old contacts first. Ian Rapoport indicated on NFL Total Access that several teams are showing preliminary interest in veteran Jimmy Graham. The former Pro Bowler concluded a rather lukewarm run in Seattle and is likely looking for a new home where he can be a bigger focal point in the offense.

Pace was part of the New Orleans Saints front office that drafted Graham back in 2010. He has an extensive knowledge of what the big athlete can do. He also knows Matt Nagy is a specialist at utilizing the tight end position as he did with Travis Kelce in Kansas City. That could be a good match. It isn’t the only one the Bears are considering though.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins came into the league as a second round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He had a ton of promise in his game but struggled to stay out of trouble both on and off the field. He got a fresh start with the New York Jets during the 2016 season. A year later he seemed to regain his footing, posting 50 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns. He’s still just 25-years old.

That said, it’s possible all of this is merely misdirection

Those two names are recent. One tight end who’s been connected to the Bears for over a month is Trey Burton. He caught five touchdowns while helping the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl. There is a case to make that Graham and ASJ are a smokescreen to secure Burton.

It’s still just speculation at this point but the overarching facts are clear enough. Chicago is looking to overhaul the tight end position and has some credible names in mind to help them do it. Per usual this will come down to price.

Hawks Hope To Not Have Kevin Hayes Repeat With Dylan Sikura

Chicago is hoping to turn Huskie, Dylan Sikura, into a Blackhawk as soon as his college season ends with Northeastern University. The Blackhawks drafted Sikura during the sixth round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

Sikura can become a free agent if he chooses not to sign, like 2010 first-rounder Kevin Hayes did when he signed with the New York Rangers. But Stan Bowman hopes otherwise, he told The Chicago Sun-Times the following:

“I’m not trying to bother Dylan so much, I have spoken to his family advisor, I guess. He doesn’t have an agent since he’s a college kid. But we’ve had some discussions about how that would look and when he would be here. That’s definitely our plan.”

Hopefully Dylan’s older brother, Tyler, can sway his brother’s decision, as the Hawks signed him to a one-year contract last week. Tyler was on an AHL contract with 16 goals and nine assists in 57 games with the IceHogs.

During the Hockey East Tournament this weekend, the left handed forward scored two goals on Friday and one on Saturday against UMass. Sikura is tied for third in the NCAA in points (48) and points per game (1.55). He is also tied for first in the NCAA in power play goals (12). To me, what stands out here, is the fact that he is tied for first in power play goals because the Hawks could certainly use some of those.

Sikura is from Aurora, Ontario, and is nominated for the Hobey Barker Award, given to the nation’s top men’s ice hockey player.

Ryan Pace’s Rivalry With The 49ers Is Heating Up

ryan pace

Rivalries in sports are typically reserved for two categories:  players or teams. It’s Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady or the Philadelphia Eagles vs. the New York Giants. Rivalries are always reserved for on the field. Rarely do they spill over to off of it. Yet sometimes in a rare sequence of circumstances, there is an exception to that rule. It seems this has become the case for Ryan Pace and John Lynch.

The two men have a connection that goes back 16 years. Pace became a scout for the New Orleans Saints in 2002. That same year Lynch was winning the Super Bowl as the starting safety for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Neither men could’ve known at the time they’d cross paths again in spring of 2017 when Pace placed a phone call to the San Francisco 49ers.

Lynch, the new GM of the team, held the #2 pick in the NFL draft. He was fielding possible calls to move down, hoping to acquire extra draft picks to aid the rebuild of his depleted roster. Pace, on the other hand, was seeking a slight move up the board in order to secure a new quarterback. The two spoke for quite some time and eventually settled on a deal.

That deal, unbeknownst to everybody, is what sparked their unlikely rivalry.

Ryan Pace and John Lynch story began with a “fleecing”

The Bears moved up from #3 to #2, selecting North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky. In return the 49ers received a third round pick in 2017, a fourth round pick in 2017 and a third round pick in 2018. Experts were baffled by the deal at the time. They felt it was totally unnecessary for Pace to make such a move, believing Trubisky would’ve been available at #3 had he just waited. It was clear to them that Lynch had hoodwinked him, that the Bears were “fleeced.”

Time has proven that’s not necessarily the case. So far the return on that trade for San Francisco hasn’t been overwhelming. Their first pick, Solomon Thomas, had just three sacks as a rookie. Their other first rounder, Reuben Foster, was recently arrested for domestic violence and possession of an assault rifle. The third round pick last year they picked up was traded to New Orleans, who took Alvin Kamara. Thus far one can say neither side holds a decisive advantage in this microwave rivalry.

It’s about to heat up again

Now it looks like Round 2 is set to begin. The legal tampering window for NFL free agency begins today with the new season opening March 14th. Both teams have some of the most cap space in the league and are expected to be big spenders on the market. What’s more, it appears they’ll also be pursuing the same players, pitting Pace and Lynch head-to-head yet again.

The Allen Robinson situation has Bears fans transfixed. The former Jaguars wide receiver is considered the best among those set to hit the market. Securing him would give a team a 25-year old player who has produced at peak levels in the NFL. It’s no surprise the Bears and 49ers are both in on him, having less than ideal situations at receiver. So who will win in this latest tug-of-war?

On the surface, it looks like Lynch has the inside position.

He has more cap space, a team on the west coast, and a more proven head coach-quarterback combination in Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy Garoppolo. The Bears aren’t devoid of negotiating power. They reside close to Robinson’s hometown of Detroit. Robinson is reportedly a big Cubs fan and also friends with Bears safety Adrian Amos.

This will come down to who can be the better negotiator and who’s willing to be more aggressive. Pace has a rough reputation in free agency, so the odds appear against him. Will the narrative that Lynch is superior continue? That’s for him to decide.

A Dire Bears Off-Season Problem Is About To Get More Challenging

bears off-season

Don’t let anybody steer the conversation a different direction. Wide receiver may be the most hyped up Chicago Bears off-season issue. It is not, however, their biggest worry. No that lay elsewhere at the edge rusher position. Why though? Both the receiver and edge rusher spots are going to be totally barren when free agency starts March 14th. How can one be considered worse off than the other?

The answer to that comes down to supply and demand. Chicago has an equal demand for wide receivers and edge rushers. It’s the supply situation that creates the difference. Put simply there are a number of decent options available to the Bears at receiver, both in free agency and the draft. The same can’t be said for pass rushers.

In fact, the 2018 free agent class is already totally void of any proven names outside of the 38-year old Julius Peppers. After that, it’s a long list of mostly former reserves seeking a chance to become starters. What’s worse is that list is in danger of losing one of its biggest names.

Bears off-season plans may soon no longer include Trent Murphy

According to JP Finley of NBC Sports Washington, the Redskins are making a last-second push to re-sign young pass rusher, Trent Murphy. Though he missed 2017 with a torn ACL, he seemed on the cusp of a breakout the year before when he had nine sacks for the team. He’s a power rusher who is familiar with a 3-4 defense. It’s unclear where he stands, but Washington is moving hard to get it done.

“With less than 24 hours to go before the legal tampering period opens up in NFL Free Agency, the Redskins have extended a contract offer to outside linebacker Trent Murphy, sources with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NBC Sports Washington.

Murphy is slated for unrestricted free agency when the new league year opens on Wednesday, unless he signs a deal with Washington first.”

It’s not known if the Bears were planning to make a hard charge for Murphy but there’s no question he could’ve helped ease the biggest problem on their roster. He’s 27-years old and by all accounts fully recovered from his injury. If Washington manages to keep him it strips the last noteworthy young rusher from the market, making it likely the Bears will have to try solving their problem in the draft.

Not ideal given the lack of high profile talent coming out of this class.

Teams Are Trying To Find Ways to Pry Kyle Fuller From Bears

kyle fuller

The Chicago Bears weren’t taking any chances. GM Ryan Pace didn’t want to apply the franchise tag to cornerback Kyle Fuller. At the same time, he also didn’t want the 26-year old to leave for free agency. This left the team with a clear option and they executed it, utilizing the transition tag to keep Fuller in place for the time being.

For those who aren’t familiar the transition tag works basically like a restricted free agent. He’s under control by the original team but is allowed to negotiate offer sheets with other teams. If he accepts one of them, the host team would be allowed to match the offer if they wish. If they refuse, that player ends up going to the other team.

The sole difference is if that were to happen on the transition tag, the Bears would not get any compensation in return. So it would likely take a significant offer from another team to prevent them from matching it. Well, the current buzz is that other teams might be seeking ways to pull such a maneuver off.

Bears likely to weather a storm of offers for Kyle Fuller

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports has become somewhat of a punchline to Bears fans due to his largely inaccurate predictions regarding the team. In fact, he’s already swung and missed once by saying Fuller would not be tagged. Even so, he decided to double down by stating other teams plan to make a hard run at him in order to force Pace to avoid matching.

“Some execs I spoke to believe it’s quite possible Bears corner Kyle Fuller could receive multiple offer sheets while on the transition tag. There isn’t that much blue-chip talent available and with no draft compensation, there is a sense there may be a way to design an offer sheet that the Bears would be hesitant to match.”

Typically this would come down to a question of guaranteed money. It was reported the last two years that the Bears were in on corners Janoris Jenkins and Stephon Gilmore. Both ended up turning them down for deals from the Giants and Patriots. A big reason for why was the guarantees. Jenkins got 46.1% of his $62.5 million deal from New York guaranteed. Gilmore got 47.7% of his $65 million from New England.

To date, Pace has never offered a deal exceeding $50 million. The highest at present is Akiem Hicks’ $48 million contract signed last year. It will likely take that much and more to retain Fuller. Is Pace willing to go that high and also willing to cough up some decent guarantees?

Bears don’t seem too concerned with outside threats

I reached out to a source close to the situation and asked about La Canfora’s statement. It was affirmed that the Bears do expect other teams to come sniffing around Fuller but that’s about it.

“There is a possibility he gets an offer sheet but the Bears aren’t too worried.”

It’s important to remember the context here. Fuller didn’t play any football in 2016. He had knee surgery. His tremendous 2017 season came out of nowhere and it came when his contract was expiring. NFL history is filled with examples of disappointing players putting together a great year when it’s time to get paid. Is Fuller a one-year wonder or is he turning the corner (pardon the pun)? Teams can’t know for sure.

Are they willing to throw loads of guaranteed money at him to find out? The Bears are wisely banking on that not being the case.
