White Sox Release Infield Prospect

-

The White Sox have cut ties with infielder Yolbert Sanchez. According to MLB.com’s transaction log, Sanchez was released from the Charlotte Knights on Monday.

Sanchez was once looked at as a possible solution at second base. The White Sox signed him in 2019 for a $2.5 million bonus. He was considered the organization’s top international signing at the time. Sanchez wanted to play for the White Sox so he waited an additional signing period so they could find enough international pool money to add him.

While his power numbers in the minor leagues were lacking, he consistently made contact and could play multiple positions across the diamond which made him an intriguing option. This season he was ranked as the White Sox No. 26 prospect by MLB.com.

The 26-year-old played 108 games in Triple-A Charlotte this season. He slashed .271/.321/.333 with three home runs and 40 RBIs. His .271 average was the lowest of his career in the White Sox organization. Sanchez is a career .289 hitter in 363 minor-league games.

Sanchez didn’t make his U.S. debut until the age of 24 in 2021.  He quickly earned a promotion to Double-A by late July. The Cuban infielder was named a MiLB.com Organization All-Star in 2021 and 2022. During that 2021 season, he set career highs with nine home runs and a .308 batting average.

On the defensive end, he spent time at second base, shortstop, and third base. He spent the most time at second base playing 163 games there. During that stretch, he committed 12 errors. He played 109 games at shortstop and 82 and third base making 14 errors at shortstop and nine at third. Scouts considered him an average second baseman but was projected as more of a utility man in the major leagues.

It marks yet another talented prospect with potential that has been squandered by the White Sox.
