White Sox Quietly Move On From Once-Hyped Prospect

When the White Sox signed Oscar Colas just a few years ago, he was hailed as the “Cuban Ohtani” and one of the best international players in that class, as he had success in both the Cuban and Japanese professional baseball leagues.

Shortly after signing with the White Sox, he was established as a top-100 prospect in baseball and he looked like he would take over right field for the foreseeable future, as that was a position that had plagued the White Sox for quite a while.

However, none of this came to fruition, as Colas had a tough first stint with the White Sox in 2023. In 75 games, Colas hit .216 with a .257 OBP. He added five homeruns, 19 RBIs and had 4 stolen bases. He struck out 71 times compared to just 12 walks. After being sent down early in 2023 and returning later in the season, Colas seemed to never get another chance as he only played in 13 major league games in 2024.

In those 13 games Colas looked much better. He hit .273 with a .368 OBP. It looked like Colas had turned a corner, but he was sent down and Colas has yet to play another major league game.

After a few weeks into Spring Training, the White Sox DFA’d Colas and he was assigned to the Birmingham Barons. After a few weeks with Birmingham, Colas was promoted to AAA, but the other day the Charlotte Knights announced that they released Colas.

This ended an interesting tenure for Colas and the White Sox, as in his short sample size in the majors didn’t match expectations. However, it is fair to note that Colas didn’t get much of a fair shake at things, as he still has less than 100 games of MLB experience.

Colas will now get a chance to work his way back to the major leagues, but this time with a new club, as Francys Romero reports that Colas has signed a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Angels.

Colas now joins the Angels organization that includes many former Chicago White Sox players. Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, and Jake Eder are among the players on the major league roster, while the AAA team includes Chuckie Robinson, Touki Touissant, and Yolmer Sanchez.

It is really quite interesting to see the Los Angeles Angels continue to pick up ex White Sox players, as the team has had very little success over the years. However, despite having a ton of former White Sox players on their team, the Angels are playing pretty good baseball this season.

Hopefully Colas can get in a groove with a fresh start in a new organization and find his way back to the major leagues, as he has plenty of untapped talent.
