There is absolutely no doubt that White Sox rookie Luis Robert is a great defensive center fielder. He can run down pretty much any ball hit in his vicinity, but for whatever reason Robert just hasn’t been able to time his jumps when attempting to make catches at the wall.
This isn’t to say the RBI-double hit by Francisco Lindor in the 10th inning Wednesday night was an easy play, it wasn’t, but you kind of expected it to be a catch considering that Robert is hyped up to be an elite defender.
Instead, this opened the door for the Indians.
Just like Steve Stone said, Robert got there and simply whiffed, mistiming his jump and allowing the game to continue. After Matt Foster walked César Hernández, José Ramírez hit a walk-off, three-run homer against Jose Ruiz to win it for Cleveland.
I’m not going to sit here and pin this loss on Robert, no way, but man that should have been a catch coming from a talented defender that he is.
