Jose Abreu Exits Game After Collision With Hunter Dozier

-

Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu tested negative for a concussion after exiting the first game of the White Sox double header with the Kansas City Royals on Friday. Abreu collided with Royals’ third baseman Hunter Dozier while Dozier was attempting to run to first base on a pop up. Both players fell to the ground and remained down for minutes until both were assisted off the field.

Both Abreu and Dozier appeared visibly shaken as both their heads collided with one another. There is also fear that the White Sox MVP could have suffered a cut and bruise to his face due to his sunglasses. Catcher Yasmani Grandal was moved to play first base while Zack Collins took over at catcher. Despite being medically cleared, it is likely that Abreu will miss the second game of the double header along with Saturday night’s game.

Injuries have been a significant issue for the White Sox this season as the team is already without outfielders Eloy Jimenez, Adam Engel, and Luis Robert. Engel is expected to return in the next few weeks from a hamstring injury suffered in spring training while Jimenez and Robert are not expected to return from their injuries until August at the earliest.

Although it appears that Abreu won’t spend time on the injured list, it could hamper his current hot steak at the plate as he has nine hits and 10 RBIs during the team’s winning streak. Grandal or Jake Lamb will likely play first base with the slugger likely to be out of the lineup. For as bad as the collision looked initially, it appears that both players received the best possible outcome from an injury standpoint.
