In the everyday lineup for the White Sox, there are only a few hitters that haven’t been off to an extremely slow start. Most guys are hitting under or around .200, while the only main player hitting above .300 is rookie Edgar Quero, who has only been here for a few games.
It is clear that the White Sox need to add some bats to their lineup, and while there are a few options for them in the minor leagues, an interesting option just popped up, as the Cubs just designated an intriguing player for assignment.
According to the Chicago Cubs, they have designated their Rule-5 draft pick Gage Workman for assignment. Workman was only able to get 14 at-bats with the Cubs this season, going 3 for 14, which is good for a .214 average. He added two RBIs and one stolen base.
However, Workman was exceptional in Spring Training. In 44 at-bats, Workman hit .364 with a very impressive .420 OBP. Workman hit four homeruns, had 15 RBIs, three stolen bases, and five walks. He slugged .705 and had a 1.125 OPS.

At this point the Cubs are much more competitive than the White Sox, so they don’t have much room to give an inexperienced rookie at-bats. The White Sox on the other hand, have plenty of at-bats to give to younger guys, especially ones who have the ability to hit 15-20 homeruns.
Workman would be the perfect addition to the White Sox lineup, as he could take the spot of Jacob Amaya, who is currently hitting .089 and has a -.7 WAR this season. Workman has been productive throughout his minor league career, as he hit .280 with 18 homeruns in AA with the Tigers organization in 2024. He also stole 30 bases, so he adds another dimension on the bases the White Sox could use.
The White Sox aren’t afraid to roster Rule-5 guys, as they selected Shane Smith with the first overall pick in the draft and selected Rule-5 pick Mike Vasil off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays. The White Sox will have second priority on the waiver wire, so if the Rockies don’t claim him, the White Sox can add Workman to their roster. Or, if the White Sox want to circumvent waivers, they could send cash or a player to the Cubs for Workman.
At this point the White Sox need to swing big and get as many intriguing bats in the lineup as possible. With Workman’s insane Spring Training and his very good minor league season last year, it would be smart for the White Sox to take a chance on him.

Maybe hoping to build a decent team with players that no other team in MLB wants isn’t the best approach? The only “golden opportunity” for this team is if Jerry sells or dies.
