There’s no other way to put it. Just an absolute fucking disaster. Blowing a 6-0 lead in the sixth inning. David Ross once again managing like an asshole and then Seiya Suzuki dropping a fly ball that allowed the tying and eventual game-winning runs to score with two outs in the eighth inning.
I don’t know how you recover from this.
I’m fucking sick to my stomach. Five games left. Cubs have 1/2 game lead over the Marlins for the third spot in the NL Wild Card. The Marlins have a double header on Wednesday against the Mets. The Marlins have the tiebreaker advantage over the Cubs.
Holy shit. How did that fucking happen.
There is zero excuse for Suzuki missing that ball. Zero. That being said, it would have been nice if the best defensive center fielder on the team was playing in center field. In the eighth inning, Ross decided to have Miles Mastrobuoni bunt after Yan Gomes leadoff with a single. Mastrobuoni was 3-for-3 up to that point and had been hitting above. 500 in the past week.
Mastrobuoni bunted back to the pitcher, who got Gomes out at second. Ross then pinch-hit Patrick Wisdom for Pete Crow-Armstrong. Wisdom struck out. Nico Hoerner then made the final out in the inning.
I cannot fathom why Ross was playing for one run after the Braves had just scored five runs in the previous two innings and Ross is well aware that the Cubs bullpen is drained, with almost no great options to turn to in a tight game. Sure, it was a lefty vs. lefty matchup, but he intentionally gave an out away with one of his hottest hitters and then took out his best defensive player for a guy that strikes out 35% of the time.
By the way, if the bunt had worked, the Cubs would have had Gomes, the slowest runner on the team, at second base. There wasn’t a guarantee that he’d score on a hit anyway.
Just…man, what a kick to the gut this shitty loss was.
And then after getting swept the Cubs can’t beat the Brewers B-team bullpen and lose 4-3 in extra innings. Another one-run lost. Another kick to the dick.
