The 2019 MLB gold glove finalists were announced on Thursday by Rawlings and once again Cubs shortstop Javier Báez was snubbed.
Meanwhile, Báez’s teammates Anthony Rizzo and Jason Heyward were named finalists at first base and right field, respectively.
Rizzo is a two-time gold glove winner (2016, 2018) while Heyward has won five gold gloves, (2012, 2014-17) two coming with the Cubs.
So, who are the three finalists at shortstop in the NL? Paul DeJong, Trevor Story and Nick Ahmed.
It doesn’t matter if you look at the numbers, or base nominations off the eye test, or reputation, or whatever, it’s absolutely bullshit that Báez isn’t even a finalist.
2019 MLB SS Rankings
Javier Báez
Def Runs: 2nd
UZR: 2nd
DRS: 3rd
UZR/150: 4th
Ahmed ranks first with 18 DRS, but eighth and ninth in the two other categories. And if you want to bring up errors, then just start handing out Cy Young Awards based only on win totals too.
But hey, it’s not like Báez is completely ignored. He’s won three straight Fielding Bible Awards.
