REPORT: Cubs Sign Former Marlins And Mets Closer

-

The Cubs need bullpen help and you kind of expect them to trade for a left-handed reliever before Monday’s trade deadline, but they’re also not done adding reclamation projects either.

We all thought the veteran right-hander the Cubs would sign this week was going to be Pedro Strop, who was driving around in Chicago Thursday night. No word if there’s been any contact with him, but the Cubs did sign 33-year-old A.J. Ramos.

Ramos was awesome for the Marlins, posting a 2.62 ERA from 2013-16, making at least 67 appearances in each of those four seasons.

However, Ramos struggled after he was traded to the Mets in 2017, and in 2018 the right-hander completely fell off, only making 28 appearances for the Mets and recording a 6.41 ERA in 19.2 innings.

He had a shoulder injury and missed all of 2019, before signing a minor league deal with the Dodgers in 2020.

Again, with these types of signings, the Cubs are just seeing if a guy who once was great can find that success again. A no-risk signing.
