Carl Edwards Jr. was activated from the injured list on Friday and he pitched in the series finale against the Padres on Sunday. It was a disaster.

You can argue whether or not Joe Maddon made a bad decision to put Edwards in a “dirty inning” bringing him in with two runners on in the ninth inning. But I guess it was another chance to see if Edwards could pitch in a high leverage situation.

The Cubs were already trailing 2-1, and with two outs Edwards looked awful, walking the first batter he faced, hitting the second with the bases loaded and then allowing a two-run single.

Edwards was on the injured list for more than a month and it was a shame because he got hurt right when it looked like he was turning his season around. From May 6 to June 9, Edwards only walked three batters and allowed just three runs in 13.1 innings. He had eight straight scoreless appearances, but then got a back injury.

Now, after his rough outing on Sunday, Edwards is reportedly getting sent back down to Triple-A.

On ESPN 1000, Rogers also said that there’s a chance Edwards doesn’t return to the Cubs until rosters expand in September.

Not only does it appear that Edwards is lacking in confidence, but his stuff just isn’t as good as it’s been before. His fastball isn’t missing bats (velocity is down) and with his command as shaky as ever that’s a recipe for disaster.
