Kipnis Locks Up Roster Spot, Cubs Send Cash To Padres To Keep Pitcher

The Cubs made a few more roster moves Friday and technically made a trade with the Padres.

To begin, veteran second baseman Jason Kipnis was added to the 40-man roster, as his contract was selected. In case you forgot, the Cubs signed Kipnish to a minor league deal this past offseason. Before things came to a halt as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kipnis was on his way to making the Opening Day roster back in March and that didn’t change as summer camp progressed.

It was just a question of who would the Cubs take off their 40-man roster to make room for Kipnis. The answer is right-handed pitcher Trevor Megill.

Last winter the Cubs picked up Megill from the Padres in the Rule 5 Draft. When that happens the team who gets a player, the Cubs in this case, has to keep him on the active roster for the entire season and if not that player goes back to their original team. However, you can always work out a trade to keep the player with no restrictions and that’s what the Cubs did by sending some cash over to San Diego to keep Megill.

The right-handed pitcher no longer has to stay on the 40-man roster, so he was outrighted, making room for Kipnis. Megill will now head over to South Bend.

Not only has Kipnis locked up a roster spot, but all signs point to him getting the first crack at second base for the Cubs to begin the season, which is one week away!
