See, here’s the thing about Ian Happ’s defense at second base. If the Cubs have reviewed the video closely and determined he’s a disaster out there, then fine, keep him on the bench. However, that’s not what the team is saying and even Joe Maddon claims that Happ is still in the mix at second base.

Well, since the trade deadline Happ hasn’t started a game, with Nick Castellanos instantly providing a boost, Jason Heyward continuing to have a good season and Kyle Schwarber’s been hot too. So, there’s really no playing time in the outfield for Happ, unless you make an argument about him vs. Albert Almora Jr.

But at this point, I don’t mind Almora getting just a start a week. This is about the Cubs just neglecting Happ and stapling him to the bench to begin August.

Second base is really the only place that Happ can get playing time, but for the sixth straight game he’s not in the lineup.

And no one is debating that finding enough playing time for everyone isn’t a challenge for Maddon. The Cubs acquired Tony Kemp for a reason. He makes contact and has a decent walk rate.

But guess what? Walks and power are good too!

Despite only going 4-for-19, since being called up in July, Happ has a .400 OBP in 25 plate appearances thanks to six walks.

Cubs fans that want Happ back in the lineup aren’t even demanding that he gets the majority of the playing time at second, but hey maybe one start in a week to see how he does!

Again, Maddon keeps saying that Happ is an option at second base.

Via NBC Sports Chicago.

“He and I have already talked about that,” Maddon said Monday. “Happer’s very adament that he feels comfortable at second base, so we’re not afraid of that, either.”

Right now, it seems like Maddon’s afraid to try Happ at second.

But fine, it’s only been one week. You have to think Happ will eventually get a chance to start at second base. Right? If not, there’s not really going to be much playing time for him.
