David Bote’s Had A Great Start To 2019 And He’s Done It With A Broken Toe

David Bote was first called up by the Cubs last April, when Ben Zobrist had a minor injury. Bote immediately showed his versatility in the infield and by the middle of summer he was the one player other than Javier Báez that Cubs fans wanted at the plate in a clutch spot. Yet, Bote did fizzle out by the end of 2018, and at the start of 2019 no one really knew how much playing time he’d get.

The Cubs have played a little more than a month of baseball and so far it’s been a great bounce back season for Bote. In 28 games, he’s batting .280, while posting a .368 OBP and .493 slugging %.

He’s done all of that on a broken toe, which he suffered on Opening Day against the Rangers.

Cubs infielder David Bote has been playing with a broken left pinky toe ever since he was hit by a pitch in the first game of the season, he confirmed to ESPN on Sunday. Bote indicated that it has been getting better since he was hit by Texas Rangers starter Mike Minor in the season opener on March 28.

Bote has two home runs, seven RBIs and seven runs scored in his last six games, getting on base nine times in the past week.

After driving in a couple runs in Sunday’s 13-5 win over the Cardinals, Bote is back in the lineup for Monday’s game against the Marlins.
