Well, we’re still waiting for the Chicago Cubs to make a move at the trade deadline, but the buzz has certainly arrived. Rumors are flying left and right, surprise players are now available, and teams are trying to navigate through the circus online just like fans. Here are the latest Cubs trade deadline updates on Wednesday.
Primary teams for Suarez include Cubs
Eugenio Suarez returned to the Arizona Diamondbacks starting lineup on Wednesday in their series finale against the Detroit Tigers. The slugging third baseman underwent exams on his hand after he was hit by a pitch Monday night, which sidelined him the following day. Suarez, who will be a free agent after the 2025 season, has been a target for the Cubs this summer and according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Cubs are one of the primary teams interested in trading for the slugging third baseman.
Earlier this week ESPN’s Jeff Passan named the Cubs and Seattle Mariners as the two most realistic landing spots for Suarez at the trade deadline. However, the asking price has to come down because a report out of Seattle said that Arizona is asking for multiple top-100 prospects for Suarez.
Entering Wednesday, Suarez had 36 home runs in 105 games. His 143 wRC+ is currently the second-best mark among third basemen in MLB, trailing only Manny Machado of the San Diego Padres. Other teams linked to Suarez this month include NL Central rivals Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds.
However, you can take Reds out of the mix as they made a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates for third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes.
Cubs interested in Shane Bieber
The Cleveland Guardians are hoping to trade right-handed starting pitcher Shane Bieber at the trade deadline and the Cubs are one of the teams interested in the former Cy Young winner. Bieber missed most of the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April, but he’s on the door step of coming back to the majors after making three rehab starts this month.
Bieber’s last outing in the minors came on Tuesday, when he struck out seven batters in four innings at Double-A.
Bieber has a $16 million player option for the 2026 season that may complicate trade talks with the Guardians. Bieber has a career 3.22 ERA in 843 innings.
James Triantos Hug Watch?
The Iowa Cubs had an afternoon game on Wednesday and one noticeable player not in the starting lineup was infielder and former top-100 prospect James Triantos.
The 22-year-old has played in 58 games at Triple-A this season and 66 total games when including his rehab assignment. He’s been slowed down by a few injuries in 2025, and hasn’t been able to get hot at the plate over a long period of time yet. After posting a 121 wRC+ last year between his time in Double-A and Triple-A, Triantos has slashed .259/.310/.355, a 70 wRC+ in 245 plate appearances with Iowa this season.
Maybe it was a scheduled day off for the right-handed hitting infielder. He had played in all 10 games for Iowa since the All-Star break. MLB Pipeline currently ranks Triantos 10th in the Cubs minor league system. He began the 2025 season ranked No. 73 overall in MLB’s top-100 prospects list after Triantos made it to the 2024 MLB Futures All-Star Game.
There’s the second-round pedigree there for Triantos, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see teams across the league still interested in the young player.
